SWCS Committee Update

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Committee

We will be sending out updates to our community about the work our DEI committee is doing. The committee consists of students, parents, community members, teachers, and administrators at SWCS. We are thrilled to be working with Dr. Luvelle Brown, a DEI consultant and educational leader. We welcome feedback and look forward to our journey!

A Day with Dr. Brown

Dr. Brown spent Friday, January 28th with our DEI committee. Together, we laid the groundwork for the upcoming explorations and work associated with our committee. Dr. Brown facilitated a conversation that involved us establishing common understandings and definitions related to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. We also highlighted the diversity that exists in our school district related to ethnicity, gender, class, religion, orientation and nationality. We concluded with an overview and foreshadowing of the process we will follow to review and adjust policies and procedures with an equity lens

When together on January 28th, Dr. Brown facilitated activities that provided committee members an opportunity to reflect on their individual and our collective identities. We connected the identity exercises to the current experiences and future learning environments that will be engineered in our schools. The work ahead will include the evaluation and enhancement of curriculum, learning environments and school district policies in support of equity.

On March 21st, Dr. Brown will be working with the entire staff at Southwestern. On the morning of the 21st, he will provide an introductory workshop for the entire Southwestern team. Then, in the afternoon, he will be with the DEI committee only.
