Fulton Focus
For the parents and patrons of the Fulton School District
July 23, 2018
A message from the Superintendent
Dear Parents and Patrons,
The last fifteen years your Fulton Board of Education has met the challenge of providing high-quality education and a balanced budget without asking our community for a higher Operating Tax Levy. However, we have reached a time period that high-quality education is in jeopardy.
Currently, our community and students are rapidly changing! Issues of bullying, self-harm and simple individual destructive behavior invade our classrooms resulting in the need for:
1. Intensive student mental health support
2. Faculty training for behavior issues
3. Financial support to keep teachers in our district
Consequently, your Fulton Board of Education has proposed Proposition K, an Operating Tax Levy increase of $0.5698. Yes, this is a significant request. The request allows for the continuation of the mental health grant resources, which are ending in November, and begins addressing retention of teachers and other district staff in all positions.
The Proposition K Election is scheduled for August 7, 2018. 52% of the levy resources will be devoted to direct student services for mental health issues and continued academic support. 48% of the levy resources will improve all faculty and staff compensation; especially our certificated staff members. The past three years we have replaced approximately 21% of our faculty annually. Optimistically, increasing faculty compensation will reduce the current turnover rate.
Mr. Rick Gohring is providing information and election support. Several informational items regarding Proposition K are posted on the FPS website, www.fulton58.org. In addition, an open information meeting is scheduled for Thursday, July 26, 2018, 6:30 p.m. in the Fulton High School Commons, please feel free to attend.
Proposition K, is the only request Operating Tax increase in the last fifteen years and it will:
a. Provide mental health support for all students.
b. Provide classroom resource support for all kids.
c. Provide compensation increases for all staff.
Please participate in the election process on August 7, 2018.
Thank you for sending great students for us to work with.
Sincerely,
Jacque A. Cowherd, Ed.D.
