Lanigan Eagle Community Notes
Week of April 29, 2024
Principal's Notes
Dear Lanigan Eagle Community,
I hope this message finds you well. Thank you to everyone who joined us for our recent Family Fun Math Night last Wednesday. The event was carefully planned and orchestrated by our dedicated teachers. It was a tremendous success! Due to its overwhelming popularity and educational value, we've decided to establish it as an annual tradition. This evening not only provided fun opportunity for parents to engage with the math games their children have been learning in class but also strengthened family bonds and reinforced educational concepts. The positive feedback we received from everyone was truly heartwarming. The pizza food truck added an extra layer of joy to the evening.
This week, we have another valuable opportunity for social and emotional learning (SEL) with our families and students on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Mrs. Latiece Howard will share strategies with families to help with self-awareness and management skills, supporting students both at home and at school. Refreshments will be served. Please join us, and kindly RSVP at [RSVP link].
Our students will soon be taking NWEA and M-Step assessments. Please encourage them to rest and come prepared in order to be successful.
A gentle reminder for parents that Kindergarten Orientation is scheduled for Friday, May 3, 2024. Please note that current kindergarteners will not attend on this day.
Enrollment for kindergarten is now open! If you have a little one who is about to start their educational journey, please begin the enrollment process at your earliest convenience.
Safety remains our utmost priority. Let's continue to adhere to traffic regulations and utilize designated crosswalks during drop-off and pick-up times.
Your input is valuable to us. Please feel free to share your thoughts or ideas by emailing me at tonya.corbitt@fpsk12.net. Thank you for being an integral part of our Lanigan Community. Let's continue to work together for the success of every student, both within and beyond the classroom. I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events.
Sincerely,
Tonya Corbitt

We encourage you to either send your student to school with their own lunch or allow them to choose from the delicious options available at the school cafeteria.
Should your child bring a packed lunch from home and wish to purchase school milk, please note that there is a nominal fee of $0.50 for milk. District Attendance Policy
Tardy and Absence Guidelines
Effective school attendance is crucial for student success. To maintain a structured learning environment, the district has established the following guidelines regarding tardiness and absences for elementary school students:
1. Tardiness:
- Students who check-in after the start of the elementary school day but prior to being 30 minutes late will receive a "tardy" designation.
- A student is considered tardy if they are not in the classroom at the designated time the class period begins.
- All students arriving late must report directly to the office/attendance office. Parent sign-in is available in the main entrance lobby.
2. Half-Day Absence:
- Students who arrive more than thirty (30) minutes after the start of the elementary school day will receive a "half-day absence" designation.
- Students who check out prior to the end of the elementary school day with less than thirty (30) minutes remaining in the school day will also receive a "tardy" designation.
- Students who check out more than thirty (30) minutes before the end of the elementary school day will receive a "half-day absence" designation.
Parental Cooperation:
We understand that various circumstances can lead to tardiness, but it's essential for parents/guardians to cooperate in minimizing student tardiness. Oversleeping, traffic issues, and missing the bus are not considered valid reasons for being tardy to school. To support your child's punctuality, please ensure they arrive on time for school.
We appreciate your partnership in maintaining a positive learning environment for all students.
Student Medical Forms
Your child's health and well-being are of utmost importance to us. As we kick off another school year, we ask that you complete the student medical forms. These forms provide vital information that will allow us to provide the best care in case of medical needs or emergencies. Your timely submission ensures that we are well-prepared to support your child's health while they're at school. Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to your child's safety.

Families who also complete the Sharing programs page, may qualify for additional benefits such as test fees waived, summer EBT benefits, community outreach programs, etc.
Chromebook Protection Plan
Farmington Public Schools is pleased to continue Techquity, its 1:1 device-to-student program, for K-12 students during the 2023-24 academic year. In order to provide FPS students this continued opportunity, FPS is offering families the option to enroll in our Chromebook Protection Plan during the back-to-school re-enrollment process. Families will have the opportunity to purchase or decline this plan at the time of new enrollment or during the back to school registration window, each academic year. Payment is expected at the time of enrollment/registration for those who accept the plan. *Families who qualify for free and reduced lunch should accept this plan, and there will be no cost.
Voluntary Student Insurance Information
It is important to clarify that Farmington Public Schools cannot assume liability for accidents occurring on school premises or cover medical expenses for your child. Should your child sustain an injury during any school or athletic activities, please note that all associated medical charges will be your responsibility. We want to make you aware of a voluntary student/athletic accident insurance plan available through the school district, which can offer additional protection for your child's well-being during school and athletic events.

Nut Restricted School
More and more children are being diagnosed with food allergies each year. In the United States, it's estimated that six million children are living with food allergies. This significant health concern requires the utmost attention, both in our community and within Lanigan Elementary. At Lanigan, the safety and well-being of our students have always been our top priority.
Approximately 10% of our Lanigan students have food allergies, some of which are severe and can trigger life-threatening reactions even through contact with peanuts or surfaces that have come in contact with nuts. Lanigan Elementary is a Nut-Restricted School, and to uphold this commitment to safety, we have established the following guidelines:
Please refrain from sending any food items containing peanuts, tree nuts, or sesame into school, whether for lunch, snacks, classroom treats, or after-school activities. If a nut-containing product is brought to school, it will be returned home with a friendly reminder.
Additionally, please avoid sending food products with labels indicating "processed/manufactured on equipment/in a facility that also processes nuts" or similar warnings. Such items are not safe for children with food allergies and will be returned home if found at school. Always check labels before sending any food item to school.
Classroom holiday parties will be organized in coordination with your child's teacher and parent volunteers. Please remember that Lanigan's nut-restricted guidelines also apply to food items brought in for these celebrations; no foods containing peanuts, tree nuts, sesame, or those processed on shared equipment or in shared facilities are allowed. We kindly request that you refrain from bringing homemade items to parties, regardless of their perceived safety.
If your child consumes nuts or nut-containing products for breakfast, please ensure they wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water before leaving for school. Hand sanitizer or water alone may not suffice in this regard.
Lastly, remind your child not to share any food, eating utensils, or food containers with their fellow students.
We deeply appreciate your support in adhering to these guidelines for the upcoming school year. We believe that all families can appreciate the gravity of this potentially life-threatening situation and will join us in creating a safe environment for all our students. Should you have any questions about these nut-restricted guidelines, please don't hesitate to contact the main office.
Wishing you and your family a safe and healthy school year.
