Comet Connection
Keeping you connected with Silver City ES!
ADMIN UNIVERSE
Comet Families,
What a fantastic year we have had! In spite of the difficulties that have faced our world and community, we have all worked together to make the absolute most of this school year. Thank you for all you are doing to support your children and our school community this year. We are so very thankful for each of you!
It is hard to believe we are in the final few months of the 2020-21 school year. Soon, we will watch our 5th graders say "goodbye" to elementary school, we will help our younger students get ready for the next grade level, and we will welcome a new crew of Comets into our kindergarten classrooms at Silver City!
As we make plans for our students who will continue into next school year with us, we start planning for and thinking about class placements. Since we have over 1,000 Comets, this is an extremely in-depth and thoughtful process that takes a great deal of time, care, and consideration. It is a process that we take very seriously. This year, we are requesting, if you, as the parent, have specific input that you would like us to consider as we are making these important decisions, please submit a letter to Mike Sloop by Friday, April 2 (the Friday before Spring Break). This is a firm deadline and more specifics about the letters can be found below in this newsletter.
We hope you enjoy this edition of the Comet Connection as we share the following information with you:
- Next week's cafeteria menu
- Class Placement Letters
- COVID-19 Updates
- Kindergarten Registration Dates and Info
- Jump Rope for Heart
- SCES "Be the Light" Spirit wear Sale

Class Placement Letters - Due to Mike Sloop by Friday, April 2
As we begin planning for the 2021-22 school year, preparing class rosters is a major undertaking. We develop class lists carefully to provide the best possible environment for all children to learn and succeed. Please know that an enormous amount of time and effort is devoted to placing every child appropriately with input from a variety of sources. Current homeroom teachers, counselors, support and special education teachers, and administrators all work together to make an appropriate assignment for each child. We would also like to welcome your input in this thoughtful and important process, by submitting a letter to Mike Sloop between now and Friday, April 2. Providing your input to this process and submitting a letter is at your discretion and completely optional.
If you believe your child has specific learning needs or unique considerations that should be brought to our attention, then you should write a letter. In your letter, please do NOT ask for a specific teacher, but rather describe the type of environment/teaching style you believe would best support your child’s learning needs. Telling us traits and characteristics of a teacher that you feel best facilitate your child’s learning is helpful, but specific teacher requests will not be honored. In your letter, please do list things such as separating one or two friends from your child, personal or family challenges of which we should be aware, and any behaviors that may affect their learning or success. Please do NOT ask for your child to be placed with certain peers or friends. Please note that twins and siblings will be separated unless specifically requested to remain together in your letter.
Please print and send in your letter by April 2, 2021 in an envelope addressed to Mike Sloop. This date is VERY important. Administration reads and makes notes on all letters prior to class placements being finalized and late letters cannot be considered. Please keep in mind that placement request letters should be the exception rather than the rule and final decisions on class placement reside with the school.
In your letter, please make sure to include:
- Your child's name and their current teacher
- The grade level they will be entering for 2021-22
- Considerations for placement
- Your name and signature
Please complete a separate letter for each child on which you would like to provide us input. Thank you!
COVID-19 Updates
Students who are quarantined due to direct exposure - The Department of Public Health has recently approved that students can get a rapid OR PCR test on the 5th day of quarantine to see if they are eligible to return early. The student must be FREE of all COVID-related symptoms and receive a negative test result on either test result to be eligible to return to school on the 8th day of quarantine. Parents must submit the negative test result to Mr. Sloop or Nurse Kacey for approval prior to the child returning to school. The test result paperwork must show the child's name, the date the sample was collected, and the negative result.
Students do NOT have to receive a negative test result to return to school after quarantine or isolation - Students do NOT need a negative test result to return to school IF they are quarantining the full 10-days indicated from the date of their last exposure.
Students who have tested positive have a 90-day exemption period regarding quarantine - If a student has tested positive, they will NOT be required to quarantine for a 90-day period if they are exposed to another COVID positive person later. The only way the school can approve this 90-day exemption from quarantine is if we have the positive test on file and it shows the child's name, the date they were tested and the positive test result.
A few reminders:
- If a family member tests positive, please alert the school and quarantine all members of the household 10 days from the date of last exposure.
- If a family member is getting tested for COVID, it is highly recommended that all school-aged children quarantine until the results of the test are known. This minimizes further exposure of additional children and families.
