Trident Pānui
Term 3, Week 7
Principal's Message
This week is winter tournament week and we have many teams away competing across a range of sports. It is an exciting time for our students and an opportunity for personal and sporting growth as well as a chance to develop self-management and interpersonal skills. We hope that they retain their adherence to the school’s core values throughout their time away and represent the school on and off the field or court in a way that makes us proud. Respect for others can be shown by them in the way they play, react with each other, treat their opponents and look after their accommodation. Quality work is in their approach to the mahi of the games and matches and Kia manawa nui for many of our students is shown in how they navigate being away from home in new and unfamiliar places. We wish them all every success and look forward to their safe and happy return. The success of our netballers, basketball teams, hockey and rugby teams is already a source of pride for the school and we are preparing to celebrate that success in week 8 with a full school assembly. We will share photos with whanau after the event.
This week there are many tired but happy students who are recovering from the incredible commitment and effort they put into our production of Sweeney Todd which closed on Saturday night. It was a complex and challenging production and the performances were outstanding. The staging, lighting and sound, choreography and execution of the dancing were all remarkable and if you are whānau of any of the students involved, you should be very proud. We look forward to acknowledging their success too and offer our staff huge thanks for their commitment to the show - particularly Jason Garner and Jo Boonen for their direction, and Alex Kim and Hilary Harison for their support of the music and dance.
At this time of year it is exciting to see many of our seniors moving into apprenticeships and work opportunities having completed their qualifications in NCEA Level 2 or 3. Our Careers Team are busy helping with CVs, job interviews and practice interviews, helping students find suitable employment and helping with drivers licences for those that need them. They complete this work with professionalism and enthusiasm. If your student is in need of support in this area, please contact Julie Ball our Careers specialist via the main office and she will set up appropriate help and support.
Our Year 13 Deans are also helping students in this space as well as supporting Year 13 students who want to go to university to complete their application forms for the halls of residence. It is an exciting but also daunting time for some of our seniors and our school Counsellors are on hand for those who need some extra care. One anxiety that students can battle at this time is not knowing what they want to do yet for 2024, and this anxiety is increased when their peers seem confident and organised. Let us know if you feel your students need extra support so that we can put it in place.
The subject selection process is underway for 2024 with the initial information given to students in assembly last week and the booklets due to students this week. Please take time to talk to students about their plans and look at the options available to them as they develop their career pathway. We look forward to meeting you for the whānau information evening and answering any questions that you may have.
For seniors planning on attending the Trident Senior Ball, that is all Year 12 and 13 students, please remind them that they need to have attendance at 85% and to have paid all outstanding fees in order to attend. This is also true for the Year 13 Yearbook which this year will focus solely on our departing seniors and be a keepsake of their five years at Trident. The prefects will be working on this with our Media Coordinator later this term.
Huge thanks to whānau who have supported our students in the production and in their sports and other cultural activities this year - you make it possible for our school to offer so many opportunities for our students.
Ngā Mihi,

GBI update
A very early morning start did not halt the enthusiasm of our Great Barrier Island group beginning their four week adventure. Our coach driver, William, got us safely to Auckland where we then boarded a ferry and were treated to spectacular dolphin displays. After arriving at Orama, we spent the afternoon setting up our cabins and enjoying activities such as free time in the sunshine and rowing dinghies to obtain their rowing licence. Some students used their newly obtained licence to head off fishing and proved to be very successful.
We have heard yesterday from multiple Hillary staff that they always love having Trident students. This is the legacy that has been left from past GBI students and the 2023 GBI class have already shown that they will be making sure that legacy continues.

2024 Japan Tour Group
Here are our lucky students who are heading off to Japan next year!
Here is what Keryn Sleep is hoping to gain from this awesome experience:
As one of the students participating in the 2024 Japan trip, I am hoping to expand my knowledge of the Japanese language and culture. Since first attending Trident High School, I have wanted to learn a new language, and learning Japanese has become a new passion for me at school. During the trip, I am excited to explore the sacred shrines and learn about the importance of them. My future goal is to gain enough knowledge of the culture to be able to teach English in Japan.
Te Rangitamiro/Rangataua Summit
We were lucky to have 10 students attend Te Rangitamiro/Rangataua Summit at Waikato University in Tauranga.
The kaupapa was about Māori students journey and exploration of being a global citizen using three main concepts.
Whiria: braiding together our identity
Paiheretia: binding together strands that make up our community. Both local and global.
Rukuhia: delving into worldly issues. Creating a legacy for our mokopuna, working towards a more green sustainable future.
Workshops included learning about Māori connections within the pacific island, north Asia and America.
Students learnt from Jack Thatcher, a master navigator who introduced his star compass he helped created on Tauranga Sulphur point about how our ancestors navigated using sun, stars and the moon.
Whirinaki Tramping and Camping Trips
On Monday 14th, Tuesday 15th, and Wednesday 16th, the Level 1 PE Students went on their Whirinaki Tramping and Camping trips which is part of their Year 11 PE Assessment.
The trips saw the students set up camp in the Whirinaki National Park, complete a 13km Day Tramp through the absolutely stunning Whirinaki Forest, and then cook their own food on an open fire. Each evening was concluded with a Quiz and Marshmallows by the open fire! What a life!!
All three groups that attended enjoyed the challenge of the great outdoors and spending time with their classmates in one of New Zealand's most beautiful areas.
All students who attended were brilliantly behaved and were a credit to themselves, the PE Department, and the school.
Swimmers to underwater robotics competition
