Weekly News and Updates - Volume 2 Issue 8 - 10/8/21
We have witnessed something special developing here at Fletcher. Now that we're six weeks in, our students have a good understanding of the high expectations we have for them and are THRIVING. Tuesday, our 3rd-5th graders launched an intramural flag football club with rules they developed and agreed on themselves. Monday and Thursday, our students' artistic talents came alive with the first sessions of Art Reach. Our 1st and 2nd graders in Mrs. Duncan and Mrs. Logan's classes started their morning running club to get their bodies and minds ready to start each day.
The first month of school always comes with the jitters and discomfort which is why our teaching staff decided to begin formal assessments this week as opposed to earlier. TK-2nd grade students' reading ability, fluency, and comprehension was assessed by their teacher in a 1:1 setting using the Fountas & Pinnell system. Our 3rd-5th graders' reading ability was assessed online using the SDUSD FAST reading assessment. They also took the SDUSD DEMI assessment to establish their level of understanding of math concepts. Next week, our 4th-5th graders will be taking the CORE SEL assessment to give our team a better understanding of their individual social-emotional needs. This may seem like a lot of testing all at one time, but these assessments are quick, data-rich, and important in establishing a baseline level of understanding. This provides our teams the information they need to personalize the learning experience to meet the specific needs of each child.
Next week our 3rd-5th graders are up and running with morning Running Club! Students in Ms. Monge, Ms. Wee, or Mrs. Sperry's classes will be dropped off at the cul de sac and then walk to the upper field for running club starting at 7:45AM.
If your student is in Mrs. Logan or Mrs. Duncan's class and you are arriving after 7:50AM, please drop your student off in the cul de sac and instruct them to walk to class through the main entrance. The gate to the lunch area is locked at 7:50 when students begin walking up to class.

Fletcher Elementary Official Mission & Vision Statements
Vision:
At Fletcher Elementary School, we are a diverse community of connected learners dedicated to providing a safe and equitable environment with high expectations through a student-centered culture.
Our vision is to prepare students to grow and thrive as socially minded, independently motivated, and innovative citizens, who are confident, resilient, and compassionate.
Mission:
Our mission is to support students in achieving their highest potential by:
Fostering the communication skills needed to give our students the opportunity to engage with others collaboratively, compassionately and respectfully.
Supporting the whole child with restorative practices by knowing their individual stories.
Allowing students opportunities to weigh in on things that affect them.
Creating an environment of high expectations to help prepare our students for the life-long process of learning.
Partnering with students/families to design rich, student-driven learning experiences that excite the mind and light the fire for students to feel motivated in their educational journey.
Jog-A-Thon November 3rd
On Wed. Nov. 3 we will hold our first Fletcher Jog-A-Thon of the 2021/22 school year! All students will gather on the upper field and warm up for the start of the event. They will run/walk with fun music playing in the background for about 45 minutes. It is always festive and fun to watch all the smiling faces. All laps will be logged with our lap tracker system, which highly motivates the students to run every day at school.
Our Fletcher Running Club comes with some expenses and so we ask for your support to raise funds to run the program throughout the year. Expenses include:
- The lap tracker software subscription
- Recognition awards throughout the year
- End of the Year Running Club awards for all participants and our top runners
- A field trip for our top runners which includes all grades
The lap tracker software allows us to provide frequent feedback to all students on how many miles they have run. There is also a parent portal that you can follow your child’s running progress throughout the year. We will hold more Fun Runs as the year goes on.
To donate, please follow the link below to set up an account on SchoolCash. visit: https://sdusd.schoolcashonline.com/ and set up an account. Then choose the Jog-a-Thon fundraiser and select the amount they'd like to donate.
