River Heights Community Book Club!
We'd like to share a couple of our favourite take-away ideas:
1) Three alternatives to saying “No.” (So that you can say it, mean it, and be heard when you really need it)
“Yes, later.” (Difficult to argue against a ‘yes’. Offers insurance against switching from ‘no’ to ‘yes’.)
“Give me a minute.” (Give yourself a chance to think, decide, and make a plan.)
“Convince me.” (It should be more work for the child than it is for you.)
2) Our children need to learn:
- how to think (not just what to think),
- how to make good decisions (they need chances to practice!),
- how to solve problems (again, they need chances to practice!).
These skills will serve them well when we aren’t there to think for them, to make decisions for them, or to solve their problems.
On-Street Parking Reminders
A reminder to please avoid dropping off or picking up your child in the staff parking lot. If you drop your child off at the sidewalk along the staff parking lot, please ask them to walk to the tarmac walkway nearer the field rather than cutting through the lot. Thank you for your cooperation.
PARENT COUNCIL
Parent Council News
Our Parent Council team wants to wish each River Heights family a Happy New Year! We hope you are having an enjoyable Christmas holiday with your families. There will NOT be a Parent Council meeting in January as we know the transition week back to school after the holidays is a tough one. Our next Parent Council meeting is Wednesday, February 6th, 2018 at 7:30pm in the Library Learning Commons. Mrs. Jeal and Mrs. Reiniger, our Grade 6 teachers, will be presenting. Come a little early and get to know other River Heights parents. Parent Council is one platform where you, as parents and guardians, have a voice. Come and hear what is going on in our school in February as well as our school district. Along with school administration and teachers presenting, we share updates on our various activities. You would be surprised where your fundraising [hot lunch] dollars go!!! We help fund various field trips and activities as well as school run events.
We also want to extend a HUGE thank you to each and every one of you who volunteered or donated items for Winter Village. It was a huge success and we were excited to have over 500 people in attendance this year. Close to $1000 was raised in the raffle and we are grateful to help families in need this Christmas.
If you haven't signed up for our Parent Council Remind App. Please download the Remind App and search for @rivheipc or text (587) 409-2952 and put @rivheipc in the message. Also, make sure you check out our Facebook Group: RIVER HEIGHTS SCHOOL PARENT COUNCIL.
Please save the date for our annual Kinsmen Skate-a-thon on Friday, February 8, 2019. Paperwork will be coming home for students to collect pledge money. As always we will have some great prizes for students, as well as drinks and snacks after the students skate.
There are only 3 Hot Lunches in January. Please make sure you purchase your child's hot lunch by the Friday at 10pm the WEEK PRIOR to the hot lunch. Hot lunch is our major fundraiser and we NEED your support for everything to be successful. Please sign up on the sheets for hot lunch on the PARENT COUNCIL BULLETIN BOARD across from the office. For any questions please message Alana Durbeniuk on the Remind App.
