Beck Junior High Summer Update
Planning for the start of school
Update- 7/30/20
We now have more answers as well as a safety plan for BJH specifically. This will continue to evolve as we have better ideas about how many students will be on campus. Below is our safety plan and updated information on Katy ISD's return to school information. The district will also be releasing more information soon on student safety for those who choose the on-campus option. Please continue to reach out with questions or concerns!
Beck Admin Team
BJH Safety Plan
Daily:
1. Face coverings must be worn by everyone inside the building as well as outside on campus when social distancing is not possible. Staff in their rooms with no students present may remove their face coverings.
2. Social distancing will be enforced to the best of the school’s ability within the limits of the building and campus.
3. All students and staff will wash/sanitize their hands at least once every class period.
Arrival:
1. Contract time for staff is 8:20-4:20. Staff will go directly to their classrooms. *All staff need to badge in DAILY for a record of who was in the building for the day. Individual teachers need to badge in and not go in the door with others.
2. Doors open at 8:30 and students go directly to class. Walkers/bikers/parent drop off will enter through the gym doors only.
3. Buses will be unloaded one at a time by an AP starting at 8:30. These students will enter through the front doors.
4. Grab and go breakfast cart ONLY (located by the trophy case). No breakfast in the cafeteria.
5. All late students (and new enrollees) will have their temperatures taken by the nurse before being released to class. This does not include students traveling on a late school bus.
6. Teachers without first period will assist admin and counselors in hallways to minimize student contact.
During Class:
1. Desks/tables will be spread out to the maximum extent allowed by the confines of the classroom. If a teacher has only tables, they can spread out chairs and encourage the use of clipboards, binders, etc. to write on.
2. Only one student in a class at a time may use the restroom/get water.
3. All passes out of class must be a one-time use disposable pass.
4. Before and after class- students will wipe down all surfaces in their area and sanitize their hands.
Between Classes:
1. The main hallway will be one way between classes (after arrival).
2. There are several sanitation stations spread out across the school.
3. Water fountains will be only for filling up water bottles.
4. Teachers with their conference period will assist admin and counselors in hallways to minimize student contact.
5. There are no lockers being handed out (except in special circumstances) to reduce stopping and congregating.
Lunch:
1. Operating at ½ capacity inside the cafeteria- no more than 6 students to a table. Extra tables will be set up in the hallway and on stage as needed.
2. Masks must be worn in line and when finished eating.
3. Lunch lines will be socially distanced (floor stickers indicating each 6 ft. spot).
4. Students will not be allowed repeat trips through the line.
5. No food drop-offs of any kind are allowed.
6. Doors will be opened to the patio to allow for better air flow in the space.
7. Sharing food will be discouraged.
Dismissal:
1. Staggered dismissal-
4:00- Car riders begin exiting the building
4:03- Walkers/bikers begin exiting the building
4:05- Buses will begin to be called for one at a time
4:15- Any remaining bus riders will be called to the cafeteria
Instructional Options- Updated
Option 1: In-Person Instruction
- Intermittent School to Home Virtual Instruction will begin August 19 for students who are electing to participate in-person instruction when campuses reopen. The plan as of now is to begin the year online and start in-person on September 8th. This start date is subject to change based on current health conditions in Harris and Fort Bend Counties. The Superintendent will continue to update the community about the start of in-person instruction. We will provide more information about these three weeks and how to access everything your student will need soon.
- When there is a need to temporarily delay the reopening of schools for in-person instruction, or close a class or facility due to COVID-19, teachers assigned to teach in-person classes transition to instructing virtual classes via Canvas. Temporary transitions to virtual learning (i.e. Intermittent Home to School) are not part of the Katy Virtual Academy (KVA) programming.
- In person instruction includes face-to-face instruction, in addition to the utilization of the digital learning management system, Canvas, for other in-class supports and resources. Canvas can also be utilized as a virtual resource that provides a platform for continuous learning should there be an intermittent return from school to home instruction due to COVID-19. Daily attendance is taken. Masks will be required on campus at all times.
- In preparation for the first day of instruction on August 19, students who elect the virtual instruction option through Katy Virtual Academy (KVA) must submit a KVA commitment form by August 5. Even though all Katy ISD students will participate in virtual learning from August 19 to September 4, it’s important for families to continue to formally inform the District if they plan to participate in KVA. This will ensure students have the same teacher on September 8, regardless of whether KVA or in-person instruction is elected.
- The KVA instructional framework encompasses a schedule in which students are able to engage in two-way, real-time, live instruction with teachers that is delivered through technology devices (also known as synchronous instruction). KVA students can communicate and request support from teachers when needed. Students engage with their academic material on a daily basis and the KVA instructional schedule meets the minimum number of required daily minutes per the TEA. Daily attendance is taken.
- General questions regarding Katy Virtual Academy, please email: KVA@katyisd.org
- Parents can sign their student up for Katy Virtual Academy for the fall 2020 semester by logging into PowerSchool. The last day to sign up for KVA is August 5th.
- Parents with a student in need of a device for participation in KVA may request one through a designated Student Device Request Form which will be available on the Smart ReStart webpage beginning on Thursday, August 6.
- The district released a set of FAQs about Katy Virtual School. The link is here.

Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer
Do you know a family whose children receive free or reduced-priced school meals?
The Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) helps families buy food. P-EBT is for children who received SNAP food benefits for March 2020 and children who are certified for free or reduced-priced school meals during the 2019-20 Texas school year.
The deadline to apply for P-EBT food benefits has been extended to July 31. Children who received free or reduced-price school meals through the National School Lunch Program during the 2019-2020 school year are eligible.
Visit hhs.texas.gov/pebt or contact the P-EBT Call Center at 833-613-6220 for more information.
