Perkiomen Valley Athletics
Week of May 17
Spring Sports Updates and Mask Update
Before I get started with the specifics of our accomplishments in the PV sports world, I wanted to reiterate the good news for our athletes regarding the wearing of masks. The Montgomery County Office of Public Health (OPH) has revised its masking guidance for outdoor activities, effective May 14, 2021. The new guidance applies directly to physical activities such as athletics and the Perkiomen Valley School District will follow this guidance. This means that while our spring athletes are involved in outdoor sports, they will not have to wear masks. During practice and games, while in competitive action, masks do not have to be work. Our athletes still need to wear masks when not involved in physical activity, on the sidelines, and in the dugout. While coaches and spectators still need to wear masks, this is a great change for our student-athletes.
In addition to celebrating the good news about masks, we are also winding down our spring sports seasons and have plenty to celebrate. A number of our spring sports teams are preparing for the playoffs. Our baseball team is 10-6 and look like they have qualified for the playoffs as they currently sit in 16th place in District 1 (20 teams qualify). In softball, 24 teams qualify for the district playoffs and we currently sit in 22nd place with a 9-8 record. We can solidify our position in the playoffs with wins this week over Gwynned Mercy and/or North Penn. Girls' lacrosse finished their season with a 6-8 record and are on the outside looking in for the playoff picture. Our ladies were so very close to making the playoffs as they suffered a number of tough losses versus very good opponents. Boys' lacrosse finished the regular season 13-2 and have qualified as the 3 seed for the district 1 tournament. The first playoff game for them will be Thursday, May 20 here at PV 7pm versus the winner of the Council Rock North and Upper Dublin game. Boys' tennis finished their most successful season to date last week as Aaron Fry and Carter Young lost a tough match in the PAC doubles semifinals. Lastly, a number of our track and field athletes (see below) have qualified and are preparing for the district 1 track and field championships to be held Friday and Saturday at Coatesville. Good luck to all of our coaches, athletes, and teams as we move on in district play.
I do have many people to thank for the success of our spring sports but I wanted to single out Mr. Ryan Kuhn. Because of the compressed schedule for spring sports and the ability to use our turf fields in the evenings, Mr. Kuhn has gone above and beyond for our student-athletes by working very long days. He has announced every lacrosse game and track and field event in the stadium while also keeping the scoreboard for our baseball games. If you see Mr. Kuhn, please be sure to say thank you for all he has done this year.
Sincerely,
Robert L. Felty Jr.
