Class Placement Input-Due April 1

Dear Parents,

One of the most critical and time-consuming tasks for teachers, and for me, during this time of year is class placement for next year. The procedure we follow to ensure the best classroom environment possible for each child has several steps and takes several meetings. This task is even more challenging when we receive a large number of parent requests in the spring. Before we developed a policy on class placement requests, we would receive up to 140 requests for specific class placements each spring. When teachers began to make class lists, we found it impossible to have these requests and still maintain the balance in each classroom that is necessary for kids to have the optimum environment in which to learn.

Fortunately, Werner’s class placement policy, developed some years ago by our Werner Council, has worked well for us. Please take the time to read the policy. My hope is that it will answer your questions or concerns. If it doesn’t, please let me know (hcamp@psdschools.org).

Please do not feel that you need to give us written input. In other words, do not feel obligated to write a letter unless you have a specific reason to do so. You can be sure if a teacher has questions about class placement for your child, they will ask you for information. We believe that input is any information about your child that will help us know their situation better. Input is not a request for a specific teacher. Input asking for a specific teacher will not be included in the Class Placement Process. All input will be shared with current and next year’s teacher.

If you do choose to give us input, the window this year is March 11-April 1. We are offering the opportunity for input to happen online through the Werner Class Placement Input Form. Please complete a new form for each child. This is secure and confidential, but input will be shared with your child’s current teacher as they consider class placement. Emails and other notes will not be accepted. Input will close at 4:00 pm on April 1.

2022 Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS)

Werner’s annual state CMAS testing for English Language Arts/Literacy and Mathematics starts on March 29 for students in third grade and April 5 for students in grades 4 and 5. Additionally, CMAS Science will be administered to 5th graders the week of April 18. To minimize interruptions, please try to avoid scheduling events that would cause your child to be out of school during testing sessions. Electronic devices are not allowed in the room during testing. This includes e-readers, phones, tablets, and wrist devices.

To assure your child has a positive testing experience, make sure they get a good night’s sleep prior to testing and be sure to offer some encouraging words on test day. Thank you.

If you have any questions, please contact our Assistant Principal, John Passantino, at jpassant@psdschools.org.

LOST & FOUND-Last Week

After March 11, all items left in the lost & found will be donated to charity.

Spread the Word Inclusion is continuing our success through an ongoing effort by Special Olympics, Best Buddies and our supporters to inspire respect and acceptance by advocating for inclusive words and actions so that we can end discrimination of individuals with intellectual disabilities.

The annual day of awareness will be held March 31st.

Respectful and inclusive words and actions are essential to the movement for the dignity and humanity of people with intellectual disabilities.

At Werner Elementary we want to help our students understand ways that they can include their peers and help them feel welcome. We are bringing this to their attention so we can continue to have a welcoming environment that Werner is.

Our students with disabilities will be sharing a video with Werner students showing them different ways to be inclusive and what inclusion is. There will also be an inclusion banner set up outside of lunch for our students to sign and Pledge to join the inclusion movement. We encourage you to go to the following link: https://willpromo.com/soco_ucs/shop/home to purchase a shirt for your student to wear on March 31st.

When your student will be absent due to illness, an appointment and/or trip, please contact the attendance line at 970-488-5551. You may also use the attendance feature on the ParentVUE app.

While letting the classroom teacher know about an upcoming absence is helpful, the front office also needs to be alerted when your student will be absent during the school day.

In honor of National Reading Month, we encourage students to read every day and join in our Werner Reading Challenge. The goal is to read as many minutes as possible over the month of March.

  • Each day, students will write the name of the book and the number of minutes read on the Student Reading Log. Being read to will also count in the challenge!
  • For any student that turns in a Student Reading Log at the end of March, they will receive prize (any number of minutes).
  • For students that read at least 300 minutes for the month, they will receive a token for the book machine.
  • If our whole school reads over 100,000 minutes, we will have a special prize for the whole school!

After March 31, students will turn in their Student Reading Log to their teacher. Have fun reading Wildcats!

Also, students will receive one of the paw bookmarks (see picture) from their teacher in the coming week as part of the celebration of reading.
