Family Engagement
The second full week of November is college, career, and FAMILY ENGAGEMENT WEEK!
We ask that you check out the activities for the week and plan to participate in one. Some activities include:
- Monday 11.13, come out and greet scholars wishing them a GREAT DAY and encouraging them to DREAM BIG in the carpool lane or in the hallways en route to class.
- Tuesday, 11.14, plan to attend the monthly PTA Meeting, join if you have not already, and learn what we can do as a collective to positively impact all of our scholars!
- Thursday, 11.16, allow your scholar to share what s/he has learned thus far this semester, then go with them to lunch during our annual THANKSGIVING DINNER.
Remember, however, family engagement is not only for parents. Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents, Godparents, Grandfriends, or whomever you choose to call family are all equally important in the Family Engagement aspect of your scholar's development.
Further, Family Engagement is not only for one week in November. Engage with us at one of the following opportunities:
Monthly Parent Academy; Stop by our weekly PLCs (Parent Learning Cafe) each Thursday at 9am; Volunteer to chaperone a field trip, or school event; Speak with your scholar's teacher to inquire about volunteer opportunities in the classroom; Co-sponsor a club or organization with a faculty member; Volunteer to be a guest speaker about your career during our monthly Dress for Success; Attend a GO Team Meeting, or Join PTA!
These are just a few examples of engagement opportunities.
Consider engaging just one hour a month (two 30 minute engagements, maybe four 15 minute engagements) in an activity at Deerwood Academy and you will see a positive impact with your scholar, whether socially, emotionally, or academically!
Remember, research shows that, Parent, family, and community involvement in education correlates with higher academic performance and school improvement. When schools, parents, families, and communities work together to support learning, students tend to earn higher grades, attend school more regularly, stay in school longer, and enroll in higher level programs.

What Is the Instructional Framework at Deerwood?
As a Deerwood Academy Parent, it is important to understand the framework of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP). Your understanding of the framework will help you support your scholar, as well as the whole school program and its initiatives. This week's focus is the six Transdisciplinary Themes.
IB Transdisciplinary Themes
The Primary Years Programme is the instructional framework we utilize at Deerwood Academy. It reflects six transdisciplinary themes that provides with a high quality, international education.
These themes:
• have global significance—for all students in all cultures
• offer students the opportunity to explore the commonalities of human experience
• are supported by knowledge, concepts and skills from the traditional subject areas
but utilize them in ways that transcend the confines of these subjects, thereby
contributing to a transdisciplinary model of teaching and learning
• will be revisited throughout the students’ years of schooling, so that the end result is immersion in broad-ranging, in-depth, articulated curriculum content
• contribute to the common ground that unifies the curriculums in all PYP schools.
The Six Transdisciplinary Themes
Who we are
An inquiry into the nature of the self; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relationships including families, friends, communities, and cultures; rights and responsibilities; what it means to be human.
Where we are in place and time
An inquiry into orientation in place and time; personal histories; homes and journeys; the discoveries, explorations and migrations of humankind; the relationships between and the interconnectedness of individuals and civilizations, from local and global perspectives.
How we express ourselves
An inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic.
How the world works
An inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment.
How we organize ourselves
An inquiry into the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities; the structure and function of organizations; societal decision-making; economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment.
Sharing the planet
An inquiry into rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and with other living things; communities and the relationships within and between them; access to equal opportunities; peace and conflict resolution.
