D-Day

Air Invasion

1944, the beaches and coast of German occupied Normandy became the battlegrounds for one of the most well remembered and influential battles of World War II. There were three types of attack that day. Air, land, and sea. The air invasion was a very substantial part of the attack.

German occupied Normandy

  • 5 hours before the attack from the coast, paratroopers made a night jump into enemy territory
  • Over 13,000 men consisting of the U.S. 82nd and 101st Air Division and the British 6th Air Division and the Canadian 1st parachute Battalion
  • Rather than all landing together the troops were scattered all around making it harder to attack
  • This did not stop them and eventually the allies got the results they were looking for and won
