An Update from Perkiomen Valley Middle School West
A Word From Mr. Creeden
This week was a busy but exciting and rewarding week as the West school community participated in Read Across America Week. This week all students and staff participated in a spirit week, "Guess Who" voting, visits from guest readers, and activities for the students during advisory. The program focuses on motivating students to read through events and reading resources that are about everyone and for everyone. Readers who feel included, recognized, and a part of the world are engaged readers. I want to take this opportunity to thank our West Reading Specialist, Jessica Dean, for her amazing job at planning and coordinating the week. I also want to thank all of our guest readers from the school, district, and larger community for coming to West to read your story and share memories that may last a lifetime. See below for some pics of the excitement throughout the week as well as much, much more about the happenings at West.

Chicks and EmbryologyThe edible hen's egg is a single cell containing both protein and fat components. The egg develops into a chicken with the division of the single cell leading to the development of the embryo. Hence, the entire egg behaves like a single cell! As part of a unit on embryology, cell reproduction, osmosis, and animal adaptations, students in Ms. Emers' seventh grade science classes witnessed the miracle of life hatching 36 bantam chicken eggs. They used incubators and kept the temperature and humidity constant and turned the eggs regularly. After twenty one days, the chicks began to hatch. The students will care for the little fluff balls for six weeks then Ms. Emers will take them home to her coup. | CALCUSOLVE Math CompetitionThe Math Club is pleased to announce West’s participation in CALCUSOLVE, a math competition sponsored by the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit incorporating advanced level math skills for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. During the competition, groups of up to four students worked both individually and as a team to solve problems that put their mathematical skills to the test! The competition took place for 6th grade students on Tuesday, February 28th and for 7th and 8th grade students on Wednesday, March 1st at Perkiomen Valley Middle School West where our math whizzes participated via Zoom. | General Federation of Women's Clubs of Pennsylvania Juried Art ShowGeneral Federation of Women's Clubs Pennsylvania recently held their annual juried art show. The local competition is open to all Perkiomen Valley School District students. Three West art pieces were selected; Sixth grader Brennan Sibel placed third with his Motif (Indian Kolam) piece. Seventh grader Ellie Viveros took second place with her two-point perspective drawing and eighth grader Wyatt Engle won the first place honors with his abstract piece. His artwork will move on to the state level next month. Congratulations! We are PV Proud! |

West Reading Olympics
Two teams from Perkiomen Valley Middle School West participated in the 24th annual Montgomery County Intermediate Unit Reading Olympics competition on March 1st, 2023 held via Zoom, again, this year. MCIU Reading Olympics is a countywide reading event that encourages students to increase the quality and quantity of books they read for enjoyment. The Reading Olympics Program is based upon the belief that good reading habits form the foundation for a productive and successful life. This program is currently active in schools in Berks, Bucks, Carbon, Chester, Delaware, Lancaster, Lehigh, and Montgomery Counties.
This year's event featured nearly thirty teams from sixteen middle schools in Montgomery County. The teams of sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students read a combined total of forty-six books since the beginning of the school year and answered questions about them during the competition. Our students designed their team logo, which was printed on t-shirts by PV Ink, the high school's student-led printing club. This year's participants were The Best of West team members Alexis Alderfer, Addison Drace, Harika Nandipati, Srividya Karra, Brennan Sibel, Lucy Parlatore, and Grady Roecker. Colin Arnold, Olivia Gerhart, Emilie Knee, Rithwik Kuttikkatt, Niniola Oladiran, Sannidhi Satrusalya, and Jackson Skonier participated as The READING OLYMPIANS team. Congratulations to our amazing bibliophiles! We are PV-proud!
February West Students of the Month🏆
STAR Assessment Information
As part of the district’s annual assessment schedule, all secondary students participate in STAR Reading assessments and students enrolled in grades 6-8, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and Math Concepts participate in STAR Math assessments. These assessments are administered three times per school year, with the second of the three assessment periods concluding the end of this past month. The assessments assist teachers and administrators in making instructional decisions to best meet the needs of each student.
It is our goal to inform parents/guardians of their child’s results on these assessments. STAR score reports will be coming home with your students today. If your child did not receive their scores today they will receive their scores on Monday of next week. We encourage you to review the results with your child. The reports are for your records and do not need to be returned to school. Thank You.

Club & Activity Info @ West
Chess Club Chess, which requires wit and intellect, is played by millions of people across the globe. It is one of the finest indoor games. Chess is played on a 64 square board of black and white. The aim of the game is to conquer the opposite king. On both sides, there are pawns, knights, bishops, rooks, and the queen to formulate a strategy to attack the opposite army in a war. Once the opposition king is blocked and doesn't have any option to make a move, the game ends. West students from all three grades are welcome again this year to join eighth grade social studies teacher Sean Murphy for Chess Club! The novice Bobby Fischer's will meet every other Wednesday, after school for friendly competition where they will gain experience and skill. | Debate Club Join the PV West Debate Club. Learn the art of constructing, supporting, and discussing arguments. These skills are an integral part of life in a free society. In Debate club students will engage in a variety of discussions centered around group selected topics. They will learn to argue both their own perspective and the perspectives of others. Students will use evidence based practice to back up arguments as well as learning about logical fallacies and cognitive biases that may lead to poor argument construction. Debate club will take place on the second and last Tuesday of each month. Join us for our first organizational meeting on December 13th from 2:30 - 3:45. We hope to see you there. | C.A.U.S.E.
