Alabama State Department of Education Press Release - August 4, 2014
On August 26th, Mr. Wade Thompson with the Go Build Alabama Campaign will lead an assembly at Buckhorn High School to promote vocational and technical training. Created by the Alabama Construction Recruitment Institute, the Go Build Campaign is designed to educate young people on the value of learning a trade, dispel their misconceptions about the construction industry and inspire them to consider building a career as a skilled construction tradesman. Through advertising, public relations and social media campaigns, ACRI aims to provide better opportunities for construction tradesmen, more highly skilled employees for construction businesses and enhanced economic development for Alabama and the nation.
Faced with a growing shortage of skilled construction craftsmen and an aging construction labor workforce, the Alabama Legislature established ACRI in 2009. The institute is working to educate young people, parents, educators and others about the opportunities offered by the construction industry. ACRI’s partners include Alabama AFL-CIO, the Associated Builders and Contractors of Alabama, Alabama Associated General Contractors, Inc., Alabama Road Builders Association, the American Subcontractors Association, the Alabama Construction Trade Unions, the Alabama College System, the Alabama Construction Users Roundtable and construction business owners throughout the state.
Mr. Thompson, along with Dr. Philip C. Cleveland, the Alabama Department of Education's Director of Career and Technical Education and Workforce Development, and other distinguished guests, will be speaking to select grades at Buckhorn High School on Tuesday.
A Few Reminders: Rules & Regulations
Parents, or individuals acting in that capacity, are responsible for seeing that each student under his/her care and control follows school system policy and local school rules and regulations. It is also the responsibility of parents to know such policies, rules and regulations.
Outside Food
Please remember that it is Buckhorn High School's Policy to NOT allow any outside food to be delivered to the school during regular school hours. (This policy does not apply to a 'brown bag' lunch that is prepared at home and brought to school by the student).
Assembly
The Board recognizes the need for occasional assemblies for students for purposes of special programs, disseminating information, and other needs as determined by the principal of the school. It is also necessary for students to assemble occasionally in small groups for purposes of conducting school-related activities and business. Student assemblies, and students meeting in groups, shall not be held without prior approval of the principal. Student assemblies and meetings are not permitted without approval of the principal. School-sponsored groups and organizations shall have a certified sponsor appointed by the principal, and that sponsor shall be present at all meetings held by that organization. [MCBOE 2014-2015 Code of Conduct, page 5 of 32, Approved July 10, 2014]
Participation in School Programs and Activities
The Board encourages students to participate in all programs and activities sponsored by the schools. Principals are expected to develop programs and activities in which all students will have the opportunity to participate. Each program and activity shall have guidelines by which students are to abide, to include requirements for being and remaining in the program. School-sponsored programs and activities are offered as a privilege to the students, and the privilege of being involved in such programs and activities is forfeited by not obeying the guidelines of the program or activity and the rules and regulations of the school. Disobeying school rules and regulations are grounds for removal from any school-sponsored program or activity at the discretion of the principals. [MCBOE 2014-2015 Code of Conduct, page 5 of 32, Approved July 10, 2014]
Checking Student Out of School
It is Buckhorn High School's policy to NOT allow student check-outs after 3:15 p.m.
Only custodial parent(s) will be allowed to check a student out of school, unless the custodial parent(s) has specifically designated someone else to check the student out of school. School officials will keep accurate records as to whom, what time, and for what reason students are checked out of school. [MCBOE 2014-2015 Code of Conduct, page 21 of 32, Approved July 10, 2014]

EXCELLENCE IN ACTION
Super Heroes Unite!
Upon Mr. Markham's return, plant manager, Robby Perry, sprung into action with the forklift and unloaded all the paper from the truck. P.E. coaches sent their students to help carry the 120 cases into the building, while Mr. Carroll helped unload and stack the boxes inside the workroom. Mrs. Rosemary Gibbs also helped out by taking the pictures, so I could help the students unbox the paper in the workroom. What an amazing feat to accomplish in such a short amount of time! It is truly a great feeling to work with so many amazing people, who do whatever it takes....all day, every day!
A special thanks to ALL our super heroes at Buckhorn High School. Buck Pride!

How are Teachers in Madison County Having Classroom Discussions About Ferguson, Other Current Events?

Excerpt from article:
Getting students to share their unpolished thoughts and have complex conversations about current events is a similar challenge Buckhorn history teacher Penny Wood faces in her classroom. "They don't want to say the wrong thing," said Wood, figuring that her students wouldn't want to offend other classmates.
Wood talks about the history of race, violence and protest in connection with her lesson on Bacon's Rebellion of 1676 and how those same issues are included in her classroom discussions of Ferguson and other world news. She finds that students are more comfortable in small groups where they have a better chance of processing the lesson and the relevance of the things happening in the world around them.
"This is where we are in context to where we want to go," she said. "The way they treat people is one way we can do a better job in society in where we want to get...The more that we can talk about it, the more we can learn, the better off we'll be."
Mrs. Penny Wood, History / English
The UK "I Have a Dream" Program
Ten students from the United Kingdom visited Buckhorn on Friday, August 22, 2014. The student delegates are participants of the U.S. Embassy's Young Leaders "I Have a Dream" Program. The program is a collaboration between FHI 360 and the U.S. Embassy London, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech. The visiting students participated in discussions about civic engagement and activism with our history teachers and student council members. The site visit enabled the delegates to network with our student leaders who are involved in activism and student government. The discussions highlighted geographic, socio-economic, and cultural diversity. The interaction amongst the students enabled both groups to share information and learn from one other.
In addition, the delegates have explored the history and legacy of the U.S. Civil Rights Movement and visited key historical sites in Washington, D.C., Birmingham, Alabama and New York. During the 15-day trip the group experienced the broad dimensions of U.S. political life, society, and culture. The also gained a better understanding of the American political system, the electoral process, and the role of the media, civil society and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs).
The visit was not all work. The student delegates attended Friday night's Jamboree Game with their new BHS friends and some delegates experienced American football for the very first time. They may have learned a lot about our government and laws, but it may take them a little longer to learn all the rules of American football! Go Bucks!

BUCK NATION BUZZ
In the last few days, the Ice Bucket Challenge™ has quite literally “soaked” the nation, Buck Nation, that is. The swim team and Coach Whitney Webster, the volleyball team, Coach Travis Tate, Mrs. Penny Wood, Coach Whitney Boggus, and even Coach Steve Clemons participated in the challenge.
As of Saturday, August 23, The ALS Association has received $62.5 million in donations compared to $2.4 million during the same time period last year (July 29 to August 23). These donations have come from existing donors and 1.2 million new donors to The Association.
The ALS Association’s mission includes providing care services to assist people with ALS and their families through a network of chapters working in communities across the nation and a global research program focused on the discovery of treatments and eventually a cure for the disease. In addition, The Association’s public policy efforts empower people to advance public policies in our nation’s Capital that respond to the needs of people with ALS.
"With more people aware and more people engaged in the fight against ALS, we are poised to work collaboratively with not only other ALS organizations, but also with pharmaceutical companies and academia to expedite new treatments for people impacted by the disease." Barbara Newhouse, President and CEO of The ALS Association

September is Attendance Awareness Month, a time for individuals and organizations to learn about attendance issues, absenteeism and the effects attendance can have on academic performance and success.
Last September, there were 604,312 recorded absences in the state of Alabama. For the entire 2013-14 school year, there were 7,024,152 absences, equal to more than 49
million hours of missed instruction and learning. Poor attendance can start as early as kindergarten and continue to affect achievement through high school.
Did you know that missing just 10 percent of the school year in the early grades can leave many students struggling throughout elementary school? Or that by sixth grade, missing only that much school is strongly linked to course failure and even eventually dropping out of high school? That’s just 18 days of the school year— or two to three days per month. Every school day counts, and everyone can make a difference: educators, after-school programs, mayors, businesses, parents… really, everyone!
School attendance is essential to academic success, but too often students, parents and schools don’t realize how quickly absences, excused or unexcused, can add up to academic trouble. Chronic absence— missing just 18 days per school year— can lead to third graders unable to master reading, sixth graders failing courses and ninth graders dropping out of high school. The impact is the greatest on low-income students who lack the resources to make up for the lost time in the classroom.
Through “Alabama Attendance Awareness Month” students and parents will become more aware of the crucial need to be at school, on time, every day. The ALSDE will encourage perfect attendance through the use of social media, with information for families.
