Digital Citizenship Week! Technology is amazing!
Firstly, I would like to thank all the participating staff for providing such yummy food this week. Although, I missed eating on Monday and Friday, I truly enjoyed the treats on the days that I could partake. Great idea, Coach Sharon!
Secondly, I was amazed by the number of students who came to have fun at the glow run. They were working hard to earn another glow bracelet. Some little ones ran three to four miles!
May I just say that I am loving the Adopt-a-Shelfers! They really help to keep pencils sharpened for classes. They work hard to fix the books on their shelf and are disappointed when they see that some other students have messed up their books by pushing them to the back of the shelf. It is an ongoing battle as the little ones are consistently pushing them back, pushing them back, way back. Some fourth grades gave up their recess time to count out the red ribbons for classes which was a great help. I think the job that was desperately needed was the washing of the shelf markers. After seeing students pick their nose and then grab a shelf marker, I thought it was something that was required. Also, some little ones will put the shelf marker in their mouth even though we have discussed that it is not a lollipop. They are clean for now, but this may become a regular job for my library helpers.
This week second through fifth graders have been working hard on defining a digital citizen and looking at how a good digital citizen is one who is safe, responsible, and respectful. Children offered sage advice on how to be a Digital Citizen Superhero. Here are some of their suggestions:
-do not share your personal information
-do not talk to strangers
-do not share your private passwords
-do use nice and kind words
-do not be a cyber bully, which prompted discussions on the definition and examples of bullying
-tell the truth
-only go to sites that your parents will let you go to
One student from second grade gave the best advice, and I must admit that it has become my new mantra:
"Don't take a picture of yourself butt-naked and post it on the internet!"
Super Digital Citizen!
Traveling Around the World
So students in Kinder and First Grade were learning about Going Places Safely on the internet. We reviewed the ones they use in the classroom such as I-station, RAZ kids, Starfall, etc. They shared that they have also been on EPIC, Tumblebooks, and Youtube. Well, we decided to visit some other places on-line. We started by going to the Houston Zoo and seeing elephants, rhinos, chimpanzees, zebras, flamingos, ostriches, and more. The funniest moment was when I had a bilingual class and one girl kept yelling a word in Spanish that I had never heard. Spanish is my second language so I am going to be a life-long learner of all the vocabulary. After boisterously shouting the word with no reaction from me, she calmly said "ostrich". Yes! I have learned that avestruz is Spanish for ostrich. I love learning!
Other places visited include the Eiffel Tower in Paris, a street in Dublin, Ireland, Sydney, Australia, New York City Times Square and the Brooklyn Bridge. They looked for vampires in Transylvania, Romania. They were disappointed a city in New Mexico looked like Houston. Children could not believe that there was so much smog in Beijing that we could see nothing. We visited Hollywood, Chicago, and Miami, as well. It has been a very busy week!
Michael Dahl visit will be postponed.
Norm Berning gave the bad news that Michael Dahl will not be coming next week. He is worried about the weather & getting stuck at an airport, driving out to Katy in the rain, the possible floods next week. I can’t blame him, it is forecasted to be bad.
So, on the bad news side, he will NOT be coming next week.
BUT on the good news side, he CAN come out the week of Nov 16-18 (that would be a half day). We are looking to verify if the times given for a visit will work with the BCE calendar. I will update information as I receive it.
