THE SKY NEEDS STARS
NUDGE: ROBERTS MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLUME 20
Dear Roberts,
I remember my first teaching job in 1998. Believe it or not, I started as a success teacher at North Shore High School. I was a success teacher for one year, before I finally got my sought after job as a 10th grade History Teacher. I always think about if I had a time machine, what advice I would give my 23 year old self. That answer is so clear to me now, but back then was blurred by my ego and lack of life experiences. What I would tell myself is that perseverance is an amazing virtue, but don’t overlook patience. There is something magical about staying on course. Here is where I want to lead you, most people overestimate what they are going to do in three months, and they underestimate what they can do in one year, two years, and even a decade out.
Patience means to stay on course despite not seeing everything that is in direct sight. I don’t believe in an overnight success, but I do believe in 10-years-to-overnight-success. You cannot microwave success, it is that simple. This means you show up and do the work despite how you are feeling. In your journey you will hit several bumps in the road, but do you have the stick-to-itiveness that is needed? Every day in your road map to your future self, you have to be intentional about growing by asking for feedback, attending professional development, and showing up despite how you feel.
This school will never underestimate what we can do for a student in a year. Take for example, we overestimate the results of being in shape by going to the gym for three months. However, if you go five days a week for a year, you are probably going to see exponential growth. This is why, whether you are a Fine Arts Teacher or a Core Teacher, you have the power to change our students thinking. Our students have to believe that they are a work in progress. They have to believe that they are not defined by this moment in time in their journey. I truly believe that if you give any Roberts’s teacher a full year with any student, you will see growth and progress.
I will never underestimate the value that you bring to this school. Thank you for always bringing professionalism to our campus each and every day. Thank you for being patient with our students. Thank you for believing their future is bigger than their past.

Duron assisting small groups!
Here at Roberts we focus on the SMALL things, so the BIG things do not happen. These small things yield BIG outcomes. Roberts is a hub for learning, but safety is the utmost importance. Visibility in the hallways, reporting to tardy sweep, and being at your door during class change are small gestures that yield large outcomes in the form of consistency, relationship building and presence. Continue to focus on the small things as we kick off 2019!
Shifting from Limited Progress to Expected Progress
Below is a link to a google Doc that our RTI team created to track these students. We compared their 17-18 STAAR scores, to their Mid term scores and their Progress goals to see if these students were making gains toward achieving progress this year.
This was done for all STAAR tested subjects. This data will be an important piece as we continue to push ALL students to achieve Mastery!

T-TESS 2.1 Achieving Expectations
As we walked through your classrooms focusing on classroom environment, routines and procedures, we have many celebrations and are proud of the solid foundation you have built in your classrooms to begin working towards our instructional focus. Productive classroom environments, routines and procedures do not happen by accident and your effort does not go unnoticed. Continue to deliberately practice and revisit expectations and make adjustments as necessary.
Beginning Wednesday, as we walk through your classrooms we will be focused on T-TESS Dimension 2.1: Achieving Expectations (The teacher supports all learners in their pursuit of high levels of academic and social-emotional success), another step in personalizing small group instruction. As you work towards our instructional focus, you must establish a learning environment that supports and motivates students to do their personal best.
Listed below are examples of evidence of Achieving Expectations.
