Banned Books Week
I've always believed that BBW is the best week of the year for a librarian. This week offers so many opportunities to discuss equity, inclusion, and diversity. Not to mention bias and censorship. Hundreds of books are either removed or challenged in schools and libraries in the United States every year.
Teaching kids to embrace all literature and not be afraid to seek out information can be a little risky but it is a librarian's job to provide unbiased resources so students can make intelligent, informed observations and choices. At West End, I am pleased to see that we teach kids to think for themselves.
The emphasis this year is on diversity--books that are frequently challenged are about people who are LGBTQIA, people of color and people with disabilities, about gender diversity and ethnic, cultural and religious minorities--"people or issues that, perhaps, that challengers would prefer not to consider," as Banned Books Week puts it.
I have created a PowerPoint of 22 books in the West End Library that I use to teach during Banned Books Week. I will be happy to share it with your class either by sending it to you for use in your classroom or by teaching the short lesson in the library. Just let me know.
Age Appropriate Election Resource from Scholastic
Scholastic is providing election material for each student at $2.99 each. This looks pretty good if you want the kids to have a text for them to use as we near the most controversial election in recent memory. Be prepared for plenty of dialog/opinions. I've never heard so many kids so interested in a presidential election.
