Mrs. Beck's Rockin' First Graders!
October 14, 2016
Our Week
This week we have been working on identifying different types of conflict in stories. When reading a book ask your child if there is a conflict character vs character, character vs self, and character vs. nature. In phonics we have been looking at words with silent magic e. Silent magic e makes the vowel change from a short vowel sound to a long vowel sound. In writer's workshop we have been working on writing about small moments in our life. Students are narrowing in and writing a detailed a snap shot of a small moment that has occurred in their lives. They are working on editing their work by adding capitals at the beginning of their sentences and a punctuation mark at the end. We are also encouraging them to use the word wall to spell sight words correctly. Students made lots of observations about the rocks that they brought in. We noticed that some rocks were shinny, most were rough, and none of them floated. Encourage your child to continue collecting rocks and making their own collection at home. They can write their observations about rocks in a rock journal.
Sneak Peak at Next Week
In reading students will work on identifying the main idea in fiction books. They will also work on reading with partners and using reading strategies to help one another. We will also continue working on identifying the different conflicts in stories. In phonics we will continue to work on silent magic e and how he makes the long vowels appear in words. In writing students will make sure that their stories have a beginning, middle, and end.
