Culture Week Presenters Needed!
What do mahjong, soccer, and running with the bulls have in common? They are all confirmed topics for Culture Week 2020, but we still need MORE TOPICS and MORE PRESENTERS!
We are in need of about 28 more presenters for our 2020 Culture Week workshops. Culture Week only happens at ISB and it’s a wonderful opportunity for our students to hear from parents, community members, staff and fellow students about a variety of topics. If you have a hobby, a sport or a pastime you are passionate about and if you would be interested in sharing your expertise with our students, we’d like to hear from you! Even if you have a topic that doesn’t quite fit into this year’s theme of Sports and Leisure Around the World, but that is timely and interesting, please consider speaking to our students at Culture Week. If you know someone else who would be an excellent speaker, please ask them if they would be a presenter. Our deadline for finding speakers is December 13. Culture Week will be January 28-31, 2020.
Please complete the speaker form if you would like to be a Culture Week presenter.
Feel free to email us at cultureweekisb@gmail.com if you have questions. Thank you.
Season of Caring: Food Drive
ISB's National Honor Society (NHS) is leading our annual food drive and invites the entire student body to participate. Every year we partner with the Beaverton Rotary Club to provide holiday baskets for families of Kinnaman Elementary students. We will be collecting non-perishable food. In addition to collecting these items, our NHS students help prepare the baskets for delivery.
Boxes for donations are in the main entrance to the school this week. Any non-perishable food is welcome, but here are the most needed items:
Peanut butter
Pasta
Rice
Beans
Tuna
Whole grain cereal
Shelf-stable milk
Canned tomatoes
Cooking oil
We are not able to accept dented or rusted cans, homemade items, or foods past their expiration date.
Seal of Biliteracy
Congratulations to 71 of our 2019 Graduates who earned the Oregon Department of Education's Seal of Biliteracy. This represents 84% of our graduating class! Students met the ODE requirements through their IB Language exams in Catalan, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. Kudos to our world language teachers for helping our students achieve this distinction.
Amazon Fundraiser
Will you be shopping online this holiday season? Raise funds for ISB without spending a penny more than you would spend anyway. It’s simple to support ISB by linking to Amazon through our webpage and generate a donation to our school without increasing your purchase costs. Amazon will donate up to 10% of your purchase to ISB. Donations are used to provide IB Exam scholarships for our seniors and support student activities and clubs. Since 2013 we have raised over $3,800 thanks to your generous support. Please let your family and friends know they can also support ISB by using this link!
Picking Up Students Early
If you know you will be picking up your student before the end of the school day, please send a note with them indicating the date and time they will be picked up as well as the reason for the absence. They should show the note to the Attendance Secretary when they arrive at school, and then to the teacher at the beginning of the class period from which they need to be excused. At the indicated time, the teacher will send them to the main office to meet you. Allow at least five minutes for your student to show up. A parent/guardian must sign the student out before leaving the school.
New Community Partnership Opens a World of Reading!
The Beaverton School District and our Washington County Cooperative Library Services (WCCLS) partners are expanding access to library materials and resources via the public library Youth Access Card (YAC) for BSD students who do not already have a public library card. This special library card allows students to check out up to five print books or audiobooks from any WCCLS library without any overdue fines. It also provides access to ebooks, digital audiobooks, and other online library resources that can be obtained directly from their BSD Chromebooks or other device.
Using the Sora app, students can link their WCCLS library cards to the BSD digital library so they can browse and borrow BSD and public library ebook/audiobook collections in one place. Rolling distribution of the YAC cards to BSD schools will begin starting in November and continue through January. For more details about these cards, please see the the BSD webpage about the partnership.
Report Cards Are Going Paperless
The Beaverton School District is transitioning to electronic report cards for all students. The electronic report cards will be accessed through ParentVUE (mobile and desktop). If you have not set up your ParentVUE account, you will need to do that by January 2020.
There are resources and guidance on how to set up a ParentVue account. Please view the FAQ for instructions on setting up your account. There are several benefits to moving to paperless report cards. You will be able to view grades days after grading days, rather than wait up to two weeks for a report card to come by mail or in your child’s backpack. In addition, moving away from paper is environmentally friendly and cost-effective for the District.
Please contact your school if you need help setting up or accessing your ParentVUE account or need assistance with a printed copy. We will be sharing more information about this transition in the coming weeks.
Beaverton School District Inclement Weather Information
When the weather outside gets inclement, school schedules could be affected. The District generally makes inclement weather decisions by 5:15 a.m., posting them by 5:30 a.m. on the District website and on social media. All Portland Metro area media outlets are also notified and announce the information on TV newscasts and online. Parents and guardians that have opted in for SchoolMessenger will receive timely notifications.
The District makes decisions based on the ability to operate school buses safely; the ability of parents and students to drive safely; and the ability of students to walk safely. The decision that is made will be for the entire District. (As always, parents may choose to make different decisions based on their particular location.)
For the latest inclement weather information:
- Log onto the District's website: http://www.beaverton.k12.or.us and a page pop will be posted on the main page if there is a change in school operations.
