Last Week of School!
This week is our last week of classes for scholars before summer break begins! Our scholars have truly worked hard this year and achieved some incredible accomplishments. This week we are also hosting our eighth-grade promotion and 12th-grade graduation ceremonies in San Diego, Carson, and Fresno. We look forward to celebrating our scholars’ achievements!
As a reminder, scholars have until this Friday, June 14, to complete and submit their assignments to end the school year. We encourage all of our scholars to reach out to their teachers to ensure that they are on track to complete their courses by this Friday. Our teachers are available to offer support to help scholars finish the school year strong! Let’s go Compass! It’s almost time for summer break!

FREE RESOURCES
Engageny is a free curriculum you can find online and provides a wealth of language arts and math activities for all grades levels which can be printed out or viewed digitally. While engageny is designed for classroom use, most lessons can be adapted for use at home with your child. For example, there can be repetition or multiple ways of completing a type of problem, and your scholar may or may not need to do all the lessons if they get it the first time. In addition, there are mid-module and end of module exams and with fluency practice built in as well. We hope you find this free resource helpful!
COUNSELING SERVICES
MULTI -TIERED SYSTEMS OF SUPPORTS SPOTLIGHT (MTSS) ~ This week’s MTSS spotlight finalizes how to use Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) at home. You may be asking yourself: does PBIS really work? The good news: promoting positive behaviors at home using PBIS principles is proven to make a positive difference in 80 percent of families. Keep in mind that this may not work for everyone but working at it and sticking with it has proven results! Learning coaches will likely feel more positive when focus is on what is going right for their scholars and their scholars will respond to that positive change. Here are more resources to explore on PBIS.
SCHEDULE CHANGES ~ Attention learning coaches! If your middle school or high school scholar would like to make a change to their course schedule for the upcoming 2019-20 school year, please contact their counselor by next Thursday, June 20.
SUMMER BREAK ~ A kind reminder to our learning coaches and scholars that our counseling team will be on summer break beginning next Friday, June 21 and returning Monday, August 1.
Enjoy a detailed list of Spring 2019 helpful college and career planning resources for middle and high school scholars.
EXCEPTIONAL SCHOLAR SERVICES
FEATURED WEBINAR ~ Achieve Transformative Results by Teaching Academic Language: Research has shown that academic language is the most significant barrier to success for English language learners (ELLs), low-income scholars, minority scholars, and other diverse learners. Many educators have seen firsthand how this barrier widens the achievement gap. Yet current classroom practices and resources tend to treat “academic language” as merely a series of glossary entries, definitions, and grammar rules to be memorized. Academic language, however, goes far broader and deeper than that. It’s the language of content! This edWebinar tomorrow, Tuesday, June 11 at 1p examines practices, strategies, and tools for teaching that specialized language, unlocking the full potential of your scholars.
