Affirmation of the Week
I notice and celebrate the progress my students make and it motivates them to make even greater gains.
From Mr. Abdur-Rahman
Dear Mighty Wildcat Staff,
I just wanted to remind folks of a couple of important things as we finish the semester. As the kids are antsy, we have to ensure we are on top of everything to make our last few days safe and productive.
- Make sure students are engaged instructionally from bell to bell. Many issues with students doing silly things comes from either not having something to do immediately when they walk in or coasting to the bell with little to do. Over plan the lesson and leave no free time.
- Do not put students outside the classroom for any reason. This upsets the halls and creates havoc. No student should be without supervision, work, and a destination. Use the timeout passes from Mr. Green if you are sending students to a teammate's class. Always give them work! If they are a complete disruption and need to be removed, press the button so they can be removed. This should only happen after all progressive discipline practices (detention, parent call, etc) have been explained and executed. This is the most important.
- Never give a student your badge! This has become more and more common practice and never leads to something good. This puts you at risk if students gain the wrong access or lose the badge. It is not a good practice. Give the students an official pass and let them knock. In an emergency, press the button for support.
- All students should have a pass, always. This is common sense, but should always happen without exception. Students should have official passes or they are coming back.
- Stagger large transitions and work together as a team. Continue to walk to lunch with 1 minute between classes and pick students up from lunch 1 class at a time from the floor. All teachers should usher students into class during class change, being vocal and saying the same thing.
Let's do these important things as we finish our semester strong. Have fun in your grade level celebrations, and remind students that it is up to them to earn or lose this opportunity. Be positive!
If you wear your staff t-shirt with our yearly theme, please take time to explain to students what it means. It is the basis for empathy, which is what our culture should be founded upon.
Lastly, as we are all working hard keeping students in line, please feel free to wear jeans all next week (if you didn't read the rest of the email, then don't take this liberty). Please maintain your professional demeanor and composure, but be comfortable. Four more days!
With thanks,
Luqman Abdur-Rahman
