An Important Message from Mrs. Vietri
Dear Caln Community, Parents and Guardians,
I would like to begin this letter by expressing my sincere gratitude for having the opportunity to be the Principal at Caln Elementary School. This comes with great difficulty to write, but I want to inform you that I have submitted my resignation from my role as Principal of Caln Elementary School, within the Coatesville Area School District. I have been provided an opportunity to be Principal at an Elementary School that is closer to home.
The decision has been difficult to make as I have built such strong relationships throughout the district and community. I am proud of the growth, progress, and success of our students and school. I am proud to have been provided the opportunity to work in a district so rich in diversity. I know that moving forward the staff will continue to dedicate their time and instructional practice to the meaningful work that has been occurring through data analysis, data informed decisions and instruction and the implementation of MTSS (academic and behavioral components.)
I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to work with some of the finest teachers, administrators, and staff in the profession. I feel honored to have been able to lead the amazing students at Caln Elementary School. I feel thankful to have built the positive relationships with families through the years. Throughout my career, I have learned the importance of being a life-long learner and Instructional leader. I have and will continue to strive to improve in all areas to become the most effective educational leader.
Through my experiences leading, it is evident that staff and students within Caln Elementary School strive to meet the common goals, vision, and mission in place for academic achievement and student success. Our families have supported these educational endeavors through the years, and we have been able to see the positive impact. I can whole-heartedly say that the dedication of our staff, to the well-being of students, families, staff, and community far exceeds the highest expectations. I am filled with happiness knowing there will be continued success in the future of all our students, families, and faculty.
I sincerely appreciate the experiences and opportunities I have been provided as an employee within Coatesville Area School District. I look forward to continuing to support the students, families, staff and incoming Administration in my transition through the summer. We will continue to persevere and finish this school year strong. The heartbeat of Caln will continue to live through all that we do. The compassion, kindness, and knowledge of our students will continue to extend beyond the walls of the school building and make a lasting impact on those around us.
Sincerely,
Rebecca Vietri, Principal
Summer Reading for Elementary Students
The district is excited to announce several summer reading initiatives including One District, One Book. Each elementary family will be given a copy of The BFG by Ronald Dahl. The book teaches acceptance and compassion, which in addition to a love for reading, are two traits we promote in the Coatesville Area School District.
More details on this initiative will be shared over the next few weeks including a reading schedule, info related to daily trivia questions, as well as special activities including a district-wide outdoor movie night in August.
The summer reading fun doesn’t stop there. The district is challenging every K-8 student to meet their weekly unit target on Lexia at least 6 times over the summer to help maintain and/or improve reading skills. Students that meet this challenge will receive a special reward when they return to school in the fall. For additional information, see the attached flyer.
Finally, the district is sponsoring a social media campaign, #CASDLovesToRead22. The district is asking its students to show off the books that they love all summer long. For additional information, see the attached flyer.
Summer Reading for Students Entering Grade 6:
The district is requiring all students entering grade 6 to complete a required summer reading assignment. Each student is being asked to read one book from their grade-specific list and complete a follow up activity (one-pager). The assignment will be graded.
The reading list aligns with the first thematic unit in 6th grade (Resilience in the Great Depression) to help build background knowledge and support comprehension. Students will be given the summer reading assignment in class during the week of 5/23. E-book and/or audio versions of several of the texts will be available for free via Mackin Library.
A hard copy of the assignment will be given to each student and will be posted to the district website (see Educational Services tab).
Expectations for Student Behavior: Home and School Collaboration
We continue to reiterate our expectations for student behavior within the school building, on the buses, and outside of the school setting. We have recently been seeing an increase of issues involving inappropriate use of social media or inappropriate interactions, including bullying through social media.
We are continuing to enforce the code of conduct regarding these issues and have been taking steps to address the issues if they are brought into the school setting. We are also utilizing our guidance counselor and mental health therapist to provide talks with the students as a preventative measure.
We understand the role that technology has in the lives of our students and we appreciate you speaking to your students about the importance of appropriate interacting with others and appropriate use of technology. We also appreciate your support in speaking to students about appropriate interactions with other students.
With our collaboration and teamwork together, we know that our students will understand the consistency between home and school and will follow the expectations that are put forth and within the code of conduct.

Important Update: Loss/Damage/Replacement of District Materials Policy 224
Title LOSS/DAMAGE/REPLACEMENT OF DISTRICT MATERIALS Code 224-AR-0 LOSS/DAMAGE/REPLACEMENT OF DISTRICT MATERIALS
Status Administrative Review Adopted July 26, 2016
Last Reviewed March 8, 2022
224-AR-0. LOSS/DAMAGE/REPLACEMENT OF DISTRICT MATERIALS
Books, materials, supplies, equipment and furniture used by students are the property of the district.
Teachers will instruct students about their responsibility to take pride in the school and to take proper care of books, materials, supplies and furnishings. Students are fully responsible for loss and damage of school and district property.
Students who willfully cause loss or damage to school or district property will be subject to disciplinary measures in accordance with the applicable Code of Student Conduct. The costs of repair and/or replacement of books, materials, supplies, equipment and furniture caused by damage or loss will be charged to the responsible student.
The building principal will determine the required cost of repair or replacement. The charge will be based on the extent of damage or loss and will be commensurate with the value of the object. Value will be determined by the remaining life of the object and its replacement or repair cost.
The building principal will notify in writing the parents/guardians of a student who is assessed a cost for loss or damage to school or district property.
The notice will inform the parents/guardians that the debt must be paid within ten (10) school days, unless the circumstance or amount of the charge is extraordinary.
If restitution is not made within the ten (10) school day period, the building principal will notify the parents/guardians that payment of the debt is past due and will allow them an additional thirty (30) calendar days to make payment. If the debt is not paid within the thirty (30) calendar days, the principal will immediately refer the financial obligation to the local magistrate’s office for processing and collection, with those costs added to the original debt.
The principal may waive all or a portion of a debt if s/he determines any of the following conditions are met:
1. The student or parents/guardians are financially unable to pay the debt.
2. The cost to notify the parents/guardians and/or refer the financial obligation to the local magistrate would cost more than the debt to be collected.
3. Mitigating circumstances preclude collection of the debt.

Like any skill, reading and writing improve with practice. Students need to understand the importance of reading and writing in our everyday lives. In this video below, Jonathan shares ways kids could write letters as a way to foster community, as well as a love for writing.

Important Chromebook Update: Students Must Bring in Chromebooks Daily
Chromebooks may be utilized for assessment gathering, including Assessments such as NWEA Map testing.
Please ensure your students are in the practice of bringing their Chromebooks to school Daily.
Importance of Attendance: Attendance Letters have been sent and Attendance Meetings are being scheduled with Guidance/Administration
Did you know that children can suffer academically if they miss 10 percent of the school year?
That’s just 18 days, or 2 to 3 days a month. Students who miss 10% of the school year are considered chronically absent. The research shows us that absences add up.
That’s as true for kindergartners as it is for 12th graders. It’s as true for excused absences as it is for skipping school or taking a family vacation.
A student is considered absent if they are not physically participating in instruction or instruction-related activities on school grounds or at an approved off-grounds location. Chronically absent students include students who are absent regardless of whether absences are excused or unexcused; whatever the reason for the absence, instructional hours are lost.
For example, out of school suspensions and excused absences for approved family-sponsored educational trips would be coded as absences for purposes of chronic absenteeism and regular attendance measures.
ABSENT (Examples)
- Absence from school (excused or unexcused)
- Out-of-School Suspension
- Extended illness (not coded homebound)
- Bereavement
- Non-school sponsored approved educational trips
- College visits not part of curriculum or course expectations
PRESENT (Examples)
- Career Education and Work experiences sponsored by the school entity
- In-school Suspension
- Homebound Instruction
- School-sponsored field-trips or college visits
This school year let’s work together to get all kids to school—on time, every day.
Attendance letters have been mailed indicating total attendance days. Attendance meetings will be scheduled to develop attendance plans where appropriate.
If students are absent, please ensure you are sending in a note or emailing CNattendance@casdschools.org.
