Court Reporting in the News
Alumni Blog (Taisha Herr)
Taisha Herr is a court reporter from Lebanon, Pennsylvania. When she’s not busy working, she enjoys running in order to clear her mind and refresh herself after a long day. Taisha graduated from College of Court Reporting (CCR) in November of 2017. Why did she choose CCR? “I needed an online program that fit my schedule. CCR was so accommodating. Someone was always on-hand for questions. I even had teachers that gave their cell phone number, and I could text with questions and encouragement.” After graduation, Taisha started working for the County of Lebanon as an official court reporter
When asked how she became interested in court reporting,Taisha replied that before CCR she worked as a courtroom clerk. She knew there was a shortage of court reporters in the area and the judge for whom she worked felt she would be a great fit for the job.
While in school, Taisha’s biggest fans were her family members. She wanted to provide a better life for her son, and her boyfriend encouraged her constantly through school. “He would help me celebrate if I passed a test I was really struggling with, and he helped with my drills to build muscle memory. I couldn’t ask for a better support system.” And, although it was difficult at times, she never gave up. Her advice for court reporting students who are struggling, “DRILLS DRILLS DRILLS!! It will seem like a pain in the butt, but it’s worth every moment.” The best advice she received while in court reporting school? “Stick with it, even when you feel like you hit a wall and can’t go any farther. You’ll get over that bump and keep going. Don’t give up.”
As Taisha transititioned from being a student into a working professional, she found it to be a bit of an adjustment. An example of that adjustment occurred when she started working as an official court reporter. Because each courthouse is different in the way they want their transcripts formatted, it took her a little time to get used to the various requests. But, armed with her CCR education, her support system, and her will to thrive in the profession, Taisha knew she could conquer any obstacle.

CCR Student wins NCRA scholarship!
The National Court Reporters Association ( NCRA) announced its winners of the 2019 Council on Approved Student Education (CASE ) Student Scholarship. Winners were selected based on their essay response to the prompt, “Describe the importance of earning your Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) certification as a new professional.”
Patricia Lopez, a College of Court Reporting (CCR) student, was one of five students awarded the CASE Student Scholarship. She received $500. Patricia is from McAllen, Texas, where she hopes to work for the Hidalgo County court system. As she nears her exit speeds, she plans to earn her Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) certification and help fill the demand for skilled court reporters in Texas.
Each year, CASE scholarships are awarded to five students who attend an NCRA-approved court reporting program. Patricia earned this scholarship by passing a 140 to 180 words per minute speed test, having an exemplary academic record, holding an NCRA student membership, submitting a speed verification form along with three recommendation forms, a copy of her most recent transcript, and an essay describing the importance of earning her RPR certification.
“Receiving the scholarship will help me accomplish my dream of becoming a court reporter and will provide me the opportunity to create a better life for my family.” -Patricia Lopez
Almost two years ago, after beginning classes at CCR, Patricia took a case assistant position at the Hidalgo County Probation Department. Today she continues to work hard for the department while preparing for her upcoming court reporting certification exam.
