Sharing Second Grade
A Peek at Our Week
September 5, 2017
MATH:
2.1 - In our first math unit students are learning to understand place value. We are modeling, reading, and writing numbers to 1000 using base ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. We will learn to skip count by 5s, 10s, and 100s within 1000. We will compare two three-digit numbers using <, =, and >, and record the results of the comparisons. We will also draw picture graphs and bar graphs to represent data and use the data to solve problems presented in the graphs.
2.2 - Our math unit is moving right along, we completed 3-digit addition with regrouping and we're moving on to subtraction with regrouping. To introduce subtraction students enjoyed a literature connection called The Good Neighbor's Cheese Feast. Ask your student about Onesie, Tenor and Hun-dred (the main characters).
3.1 - In our first math unit the students are developing and using an understanding of place value to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 and 100. In this unit we will also learn to fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and the relationship between addition and subtraction. Students will also read and solve problems using scaled pictographs.
READING:
In our first reading unit our goal is to read with fluency, stamina, and comprehension. Students will learn strategies to tackle difficult words. As we read we will also discover some special techniques that our favorite authors use and apply them in our own writing.
WRITING:
In our first writing unit we are improving our narrative writing. Students are learning to stretch out and magnify their small moment stories by adding details and strong beginnings and endings. We will discover craft moves that authors use to create powerful stories and learn to add these techniques as we write.
SCIENCE:
We are wrapping up our unit on matter. Students will review the 3 states of matter, physical properties, and reversible and irreversible changes. We will have our first science test on Wednesday. Students will also explore matter in several exciting hands-on activities during the science lab this week!
GRANDPARENT'S DAY!
CCE's second annual Grandparent’s Day will be Friday, September 8! All grandparents are invited to join their grandchildren in their homeroom from 8:00-9:00 AM for a special lesson and bonding activity! If your child’s grandparent(s) plan to attend, please let your homeroom teacher know by Wednesday so we can make sure we have enough materials to accommodate all of our grandparents and students!
BOOK WISH LISTS
The second grade teachers need your help! We would love to fill our classroom libraries with books for ALL types of readers. If you would like to donate a book (or two) to your child's reading teacher, please click here to view the suggested book list to help our libraries bloom and grow!
