Nuclear Fusion Press Release

By: Adrianna Ballard

May 11, 2015

Hello! I am Doctor Ballard, and on May 11, 2015 I discovered that we may use Nuclear Fusion as our main and eventually our only source of energy. Nuclear fusion is a nuclear reaction in which atomic nuclei of low atomic number fuse to form a heavier nucleus with the release of energy. It is simply the fusing of two or more lighter atoms to make a larger one.

Fusion and Fission

Now, you may be asking yourself what the difference between nuclear fusion and nuclear fission is. While fusion is the fusing of two or more atoms, fission is the splitting of a large atom into two small atoms. Fission produces many radioactive particles however fusion has few radioactive particles and in fission "trigger" radioactive particles will be a result. Fission doesn't occur naturally in nature but fusion occurs in stars and such, like the Sun.

Safety Concerns

The conditions of nuclear fusion are very high density and a high temperature environment is required. Nuclear fusion is an experimental technology for producing power. Hydrogen isotopes are the primary fuel used in experimental fusion power plants. This is very dangerous due to the fact that there is such high density and heat involved. Many people run a large risk of getting life changing injuries if they're working in fusion power plants.

I feel as if we, as a nation, take into consideration using nuclear fusion as our primary power source, it would be the best investment of our lives. I feel as though we can make so many things happen. Nuclear fusion doesn't impact the environment as poorly as other nuclear gases do. I think it'll be the best thing since sliced bread and I hope you all are as excited for the future as I am.
