Let's use our Critical thinking and Math Skills!
1. Every day we create 2.5 Quintillion bytes of Data. This data could fill 10 million Blu-ray discs, the height of which stacked would measure the height of 4 Eiffel Towers on top of one another. How many Eiffel towers would have to be stacked for one week of data?
2. Global internet traffic in 2013 was approximately 51 Billion Gigabytes. Global Internet Population grew 14.3% between 2011 and 2013. Based on the data in this trend, how much internet traffic was there in 2016? How much will there be in 2018?
3. Experts predict more than 40 Zettabytes of digital data to be in existence by 2020. 4 years ago, the entire world wide web was estimated to contain approximately 500 Exabyte – which is 5 billion gigabytes -half of 1 Zettabyte. 40 Zettabytes is 400 billion gigabytes. How much more digital data will have to be stored between now and 2020?
4. 12 million RFID tags- used to capture data and track movement of objects in the physical world – have been sold since 2011. By 2021, it is estimated that their number will have risen to 209 billion as the Internet of Things takes off. How many more RFID tags will be sold between 2011 and 2021?
5. 570 new websites spring into existence every minute of every day. How many new websites will there be by September 1, 2017? By September 1, 2018
6. Big Data has been used to predict crimes before they happen – a “predictive policing” trail in California was able to identify areas where crime will occur three times more accurately than existing methods of forecasting. Using this information, what do you predict about criminal justice for the year 2020?
7. Write a thinking problem using the data from the graphic. Share your problem with a friend and see who can solve one another’s problem the fastest!
