Educating Learners Today...Building Global Leaders Tomorrow
Happy 100th Anniversary
This year marks the 100th anniversary of Valley Stream Union Free School District 30, with its flagship Clear Stream Avenue School turning a remarkable 100 years old. For the past century, District 30 has blazed a trail in educational excellence and never wavered in its dedication to the beloved Valley Stream community of New York. Generations have been inspired by its powerful legacy, making it a reminder to all of what can be achieved through hard work and unwavering commitment.
Yesterday morning, we had an opening ceremony honoring the centennial. Students and teachers, both current and former, gathered in front of Clear Stream Avenue School to commemorate the occasion. Mr. Singleton addressed the community along with Dr. Garcia France, Superintendent of Schools, Kelly Urena, Board President and Bob Cohen, former Principal of Clear Stream. Local, Regional, and State legislators also presented proclamations to the school and district after the event. News channel 12, Newsday and the Herald Covered the event. See News 12 clip below.
The choir sang the Star Spangled Banner, under the direction of Mrs. Stephanie Cooke. Mr. Singleton remarked that the parents and the community were responsible for conceiving and building this transformative school. Dr. Garcia-France reminded the crowd that District 30 stands for "maintaining, sustaining and innovating for excellence." The Board president congratulated the students and teachers for upholding their legacy. Finally, Bob Cohen honored the memory of Richard Burbell the principal who served the longest, a record 22 years.
At the end of the celebration, the students sang Happy Birthday to the school and surrounded the school with a big hug! It was a wonderful event. We will have a bigger celebration in February around PTA Founders Day which will be on February 12.

The History of Clear Stream
From the Little Frame School to 8 Rooms of Brick
The history of Clear Stream is very interesting. Before Valley Stream Union Free School District 30, the friendly schools was formed, students living west of Merrick Avenue had to attend either Wheeler Avenue in District 13, Brooklyn Avenue in District 24, or Elmont. Families were concerned about these schools becoming overcrowded and worried that the children from the western end of town would have to travel far to get an education.
On May 22, 1923, Common School District No. 30 was founded. On June 19, 1923, the district superintendent, under the authority of the New York State Education Department, changed the district's structure to a union-free school district which allowed the district to provide education on a broader and more effective basis to its students. By September of that year, its first school, a wooden structure located on Joseph Buscher's estate, was up and running. "The little frame school" opened to welcome a new generation of eager minds, ready to learn and grow in the nurturing environment the district had created. Near the end of the 1923–24 academic year, an eight-room brick building opened on Clearstream Avenue and was named after the street.
Over the years, Clear Stream Avenue School, has evolved into a diverse and vibrant school that seeks to empower its children to achieve greatness. Our leaders, teachers, staff, families, and community members are committed to cultivating the minds of our students and inspiring them to become Global Leaders of Tomorrow. With our values rooted in academic excellence, we strive to make sure each student is given individual attention to reach their fullest potential, and to be independent and collaborative learners who can contribute meaningfully in this 21st-century world.

2nd Grade Students Remake Iconic 100 year Photo
We employed a seamstress to create some collars for the girls and sailor shirts for the boys, to mimic some of their style of dress. Our current 2nd graders walked out of the classroom Tuesday and onto the front steps of the Clear Stream Avenue School to modernize a moment in history. As we celebrate 100 years, some aspects of the picture are the same, like the front of the school, while others are clearly different like the diversity of the students.
*Michael Parker, a 2nd grader in Mrs. Suarez class stated, “In 100 more years, the people are going to see the pictures that we took. I wonder what kids are going to be here.” Whoever will be here in 100 years, I hope they appreciate what we accomplished.

Welcome Back Students!
Welcome back! We trust that you have had an amazing summer. We are so excited that you chose to share your children with us on what promises to be our most successful year to date! Clear Stream continues to be recognized as one of the highest achieving schools in the country, based on our diversity and academic success. Despite the challenges of the previous year, we managed to show significant growth and proficiency in all grade levels. This was a direct result of the hard work and dedication of our staff. Our Superintendent, Dr. Garcia- France, is determined to build the “Global Leaders of Tomorrow.” As we begin this new year, let us remember to treat each other with empathy and to support our students academically. This is essential to our success and our culture.
As we reflect on the past 100 years, let us also look towards the future. We will continue to explore new technologies, ensuring that our students receive the best education possible and that they are equipped with the skills necessary to thrive in an ever-evolving world. This year's district focus is Digital Media Arts. The theme is “Express Yourself.” Students will be asked to express their creativity using digital and media arts. As always, your knowledge, encouragement, and the dedication of our teachers and staff will be instrumental in fostering a positive learning environment that will support your children and the thematic goals of this year.
Once again, welcome back! Together, let us make the 100th year of Clear Stream Avenue School an extraordinary journey filled with excitement, enlightenment, and endless possibilities.
The Mood Meter and SEL
The Mood Meter is one of the “anchors of Emotional Intelligence” in the RULER program. Children chart their feelings in the morning by expressing which quadrant they are channeling. This information is used by the student and the teacher to regulate our children’s emotions.
The Mood Meter develops emotional intelligence over time. Learning to identify and label emotions is a critical step toward cultivating emotional intelligence. Using the Mood Meter can help students become more mindful of how their emotions change throughout the day and how their emotions in turn can affect their actions, relationships and academics. Using the Mood Meter helps students develop self-awareness and self-regulation. It’s essential to our culture and important for our parents to understand its meaning.
