Summer Reading: An Important Message from Your Literacy Coach
It is no surprise to say that this is a challenging time for both parents and educators right now across the country. Keeping that in mind, we are ALL doing our best to support our children in the current state of affairs. As educators working through this time we are all concerned about our students academics and social emotional welfare, and when we do return to school our teachers will be meeting our students where they are in order to achieve the most success possible. As a parent, please try to remember that even though your child might not be as far along as you would like them to be or they could have been that these are extraordinary times and our children are resilient. They will rise to the occasion, as we have done, and achieve the utmost success. In the meantime, the best thing you can do is try to find some time to enjoy family and read with your children. Research has shown that reading to or with children 20 minutes a day can improve reading and/or maintain growth.
Reading Tips - How to Help your Child Choose a Good Fit Book:
Independent reading is crucial to a reader’s development. One way you can help as parents is not only encouraging independent reading each night, but also helping your child choose a Good Fit Book or Just Right book. We can do this by using this acronym to help your students choose a book that is right for them.
I-PICK:
I - I chose a book by looking at the front cover, looking through the pages/pictures and reading the back cover
Purpose - What is the purpose for reading this book? (For entertainment or maybe to gain information or to explore a different genre)
Interest - Does this book interest me?
Comprehend - Do I understand what I am reading? (Try reading the first few pages to see if you understand what you are reading)
Know - Do I know most of the words? (Open to a page or two and read it, for every word you don’t know put your finger up, if it is 4-5 then the book is too difficult, if it is 1-2 it will be an easy read)Summer Reading Resources:
