The Cyclone Watch
May 2022
From the Principal
As for testing, we will have the End of Course (EOC) test this week for students in Honors Algebra or Honors Geometry. They will be testing May 4th, from 8:20-11:35a.m. Please make sure they are well rested and ready to do their best. We will also have iReady testing on May 13th and May 16th building wide.
It is always difficult to see staff leaving JMS. We have so many great people that do so many wonderful things for our students and each other. I want to take a moment to recognize our retirees for this year. I wish them a long and happy retirement. They will be missed and their dedication has made a difference in the lives of so many children.

Tdap and Meningitis Vaccines for Incoming 8th Grade Students
The Tdap and Meningitis vaccines are required for all students entering 8th grade. Your student must have written proof that they have received these mandatory vaccines prior to starting summer school in June, or by August 1, 2022, for the 2022-23 school year. If they have not received these vaccines, they will not receive their schedule and will not be allowed to attend school until they receive the Tdap and Meningitis vaccines. These vaccines are available at the Boone County Health Department Monday-Friday 8 AM-4:30 PM or from your child’s health care provider. Call the health department to make an appointment at
573-874-7758.
INFORMATION ON TICK-BORNE DISEASE
Early symptoms of tick-borne disease may include:
ü Fever
ü Severe headache
ü Muscle aches
ü Chills
ü Enlarged lymph glands
If you have been bitten by a tick, watch for symptoms for two weeks. Consider contacting your healthcare provider if you develop symptoms that do not improve within a few days. Inform them of your tick bite.
Ø Inflammation around a tick-bite is typically not an indicator of tick-borne disease.
Ø The typical "bull's eye" rash of Lyme disease is uncommon in Missouri and is not a good indicator of disease.
Students who have an unexplained fever with rash should consider contacting their healthcare provider. These symptoms can occur with several infectious and non-infectious diseases.
Ms. Kiley's Book Recommendation
Show Me a Sign by All Clare LeZotte
Mary Lambert has always felt safe and protected on her beloved island of Martha's Vineyard. Her great-grandfather was an early English settler and the first deaf islander. Now, over a hundred years later, many people there - including Mary - are deaf, and nearly everyone can communicate in sign language. Mary has never felt isolated. She is proud of her lineage.
But recent events have delivered winds of change. Mary's brother died, leaving her family shattered. Tensions over land disputes are mounting between English settlers and the Wampanoag people. And a cunning young scientist has arrived, hoping to discover the origin of the island's prevalent deafness. His maniacal drive to find answers soon renders Mary a "live specimen" in a cruel experiment. Her struggle to save herself is at the core of this novel.

CYCLONE FOOTBALL IMPORTANT INFO
We have an 8th grade football team that plays an 8th grade football schedule. 7th graders are allowed to come out and join the team but that does not necessarily mean they will get to play in games. Coaches will determine positions and priority will go to 8th graders, if the coaches deem that a 7th grader is ready to play, they will see some playing time.
See the following information about our JMS Golf Scramble – This is a fun participation fundraiser for our Athletic/Activity Programs. We are looking for teams, hole sponsors, or any donation would be helpful! This is a great opportunity spend an incredible day on the golf course with friends and/or family. We would love to find a business or two who would be willing to help sponsor the entire event (mostly paying for the course fees.
