5. Expectation/Procedure Reminders
- Substitutes - We have not been able to find substitutes to fill every absence. Many of our paraprofessionals have been subs when Subteach cannot fill a spot. I know this leaves students without interventions but there is not much we can do. Please be patient with your interventionists. Some of our subs have been doing double duty - Ms. Pledge has been awesome - One day she had music and computer at the same time.
- Substitutes - You MUST have an updated sub tub. Recently it has been an issue that subs have had nothing to do with their students or haven't been able to find the sub tub. Your sub tub must have copied work if you are leaving worksheets (subs do not have access to the copier and the secretaries cannot make the copies and do their own work at the same time). The sub tub must also include an updated roster and transportation list. The sub must know how the students get home in the afternoon.
- Students missing buses: If one of your students misses the bus, you must stay with them until someone comes to get them (even if that is after 3:30). Please be vigilant and make sure your students are getting on the bus in the afternoon.
PBIS Behavior Matrix Focus
We are respectful, positive, and motivated.
NOTES
- Please send me pictures of your class participating in the lessons. I share them in this newsletter; Mrs. Garris will share them in our monthly parent newsletter; and Mrs. Moriarty will share them on Facebook.

- We are focusing on BULLYING this week. We have had a rash of bullying behavior and parents concerned with their students being the target of bullying.
Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Both kids who are bullied and who bully others may have serious, lasting problems.
In order to be considered bullying, the behavior must be aggressive and include:
An Imbalance of Power: Kids who bully use their power—such as physical strength, access to embarrassing information, or popularity—to control or harm others. Power imbalances can change over time and in different situations, even if they involve the same people.
Repetition: Bullying behaviors happen more than once or have the potential to happen more than once.
Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.
When referring to a bullying situation, it is easy to call the kids who bully others "bullies" and those who are targeted "victims," but this may have unintended consequences. When children are labeled as "bullies" or "victims" it may:
Send the message that the child's behavior cannot change
Fail to recognize the multiple roles children might play in different bullying situations
Disregard other factors contributing to the behavior such as peer influence or school climate
Instead of labeling the children involved, focus on the behavior. For instance:
Instead of calling a child a "bully," refer to them as "the child who bullied"
Instead of calling a child a "victim," refer to them as "the child who was bullied"
Instead of calling a child a "bully/victim," refer to them as "the child who was both bullied and bullied others."

Picture Book Recommendation of the Week
One by Kathryn Otoshi
Blue is a quiet color. Red’s a hothead who likes to pick on Blue. Yellow, Orange, Green, and Purple don’t like what they see, but what can they do? When no one speaks up, things get out of hand — until One comes along and shows all the colors how to stand up, stand together, and count.
As budding young readers learn about numbers, counting, and primary and secondary colors, they also learn about accepting each other's differences and how it sometimes just takes one voice to make everyone count.
Motivational Quote of the Week
What the Principal is Reading
Blue Moon Rising by Simon Green
Rupert didn't especially want to be a prince. And he certainly never asked to be the second son of a royal line that really didn't need a spare. So he was sent out to slay a dragon and prove himself-a quest straight out of legend. But he also discovered the kinds of things legends tend to leave out, as well as the usual demons, goblins, the dreaded Night Witch-and even worse terrors hidden in the shadows of Darkwood. Rupert did find a fiery dragon-and a beautiful princess to rescue. But the dragon turned out to be a better friend than anyone back at the castle, and with the evil of Darkwood spreading, Rupert was going to need all the friends he could get.
