Community Crew News #21
January 14th, 2024
Diversity and Inclusion
Greeting Conway Community,
It was a great week back for our Crew and we were all so happy to welcome back all the smiling faces on Tuesday. January is a great time to revisit our goals and add new ones. Our learners have been doing just that as most have wrapped up i-ready testing and committed to continual improvement. In fact this Thursday and Friday our EPIC awards are scheduled and students will be recognized for Excellence, Perseverance, Integrity, and Compassion as scholars and active citizens. Classroom teachers have sent come communication notifying you of these awards.
On Thursday, our learners participated in their first DEN meeting of 2024. Each month our Den meetings focus on one of the ten Expeditionary Learning Design Principle. These design principles are a foundation to our EL Model. This month learners explore design principle #7 -
7- Diversity and Inclusion
Both diversity and inclusion increase the richness of ideas, creative power, problem-solving ability, and respect for others. In EL Education schools, students investigate and value their different histories and talents as well as those of other communities and cultures. Schools and learning groups are heterogeneous.
Our learners built understanding around what this means, looks, like and sounds like at Conway. They engaged in a new version of musical chairs, reverse musical chairs, and had to communicate in order to not leave anyone out. They used their genius to problem solve and make sure everyone could fit onto the shrinking number of chairs. Make sure to ask your student about their den meeting.
This practice is deeply connected to our EUSD Framework for the Future as well as our Expeditionary Learning model. During dens, learners practiced how to be effective listeners and responsive to other's input as figured out how including everyone was crucial to the task. Effective Communication is our focus this month to highlight and see the alignment between our EL model and our EUSD Learner Profiles.
Communication is extremely important to everyone at our EPIC school. Please make sure to scroll all the way through the weekly message. If you miss a message, you can view all communication on our website under "NEWS".
I am grateful for the opportunity to inspire students to discover their unlimited potential through Excellence, Perseverance, Integrity, and Compassion. Together we are creating an EPIC school.
We are in this together and believe, We Are Crew, not passengers.
Always in crew,
Tina Meglich, Principal

Attendance Matters!
Being in school every day is as important as ever before!
Chronic absence measures lost time from learning. It is defined as missing 10 percent or more of the total number of days enrolled during the school year. Just two days per month can lead to chronic absence. It includes both excused, unexcused, and out-of-school suspensions. For example, a student who has been enrolled for the first 30 school days at the beginning of the school year and has been absent three of those days is chronically absent. If a student misses 18 days in 1 school year, you will be chronically absent.
Being chronically absent has a huge impact on a student’s ability to read at grade level, perform academically, and graduate on time. Good attendance can help children do well in school, and eventually in the workplace.
Meet our new noon duty supervisor!
Miss Minnie, Rumana Rayhan, comes to us from Glenview. She's been a noon duty supervisor for a while and was looking for a change.
Miss Minnie, was raised in Bangladesh and migrated to the USA in 2004. She's a mother of two
daughters and her husband is employed by the Department of Defense.

Winter Enrichment Sessions begins Jan 16th!

Winter After School Enrichment Classes begin next week. Interest forms are still being accepted. If you would like to have your student be considered as a participant for any of the programs being offered (depending on their grade), we encourage families to submit a form as soon as possible. Once an interest form is received, permission slips and waivers will be sent home. It is required that permission slips and waivers be signed by a parent or legal guardian in order for the student to be allowed to officially participate in any of the enrichment classes. Family Ceramic Night
Ceramic Night with Mrs. August was a success! Thank you Mrs. August for giving our Conway families the opportunity to express their creativity in the form of hand-building with clay.

School of Choice is open!
EUSD School of Choice Transfer Applications for 2024-2025 school Year is now Live! Typically, students attend the schools that serve the neighborhood attendance areas in which they live. However, EUSD does provide attendance options for parents and students in order to help meet the diverse needs and interests of students within the district. Students may apply for a School Choice Intradistrict Transfer to any school in the district. Submitting an application for School Choice does not guarantee enrollment in the desired school(s). Students who submit a school choice application by January 31, 2024, will be included in a random, unbiased lottery drawing. You will be notified by email during Spring 2024 regarding the results of the lottery. Your child’s application either will be approved or placed on a waiting list following the School Choice lottery. You will receive notification as to when the wait list is closed for the current school year, and you will be provided information as to how to submit a School Choice application for the following year. A separate application must be completed for each student who is applying for School Choice. A student who has a sibling(s) who is already attending a school of choice must also apply for School Choice and be approved in order to have the siblings attend the same choice school. Students who attend another school under the School Choice option are not provided transportation. If you would like to learn more about a specific EUSD school before submitting your application, you can visit our schools page by clicking on the link below. https://registration.powerschool.com/family/ActionForms/Public/38522 If you would like assistance submitting a School of Choice application, please visit our Family Engagement Center in Room 5 or contact Xochitl Maldonado at (760) 432-2435 EXT 12005.

Birthday Announcements
You may ask how do we celebrate birthdays at Conway?
We have two unique ways that we celebrate.
First, in the main office you can fill out a form to have your child's birthday acknowledged on our electronic marquee to display a 24 hour message. The cost is only $5. If you cannot make it into the office, you can complete the electronic form https://forms.gle/3dMLHhiK5MTXJdpL9
and send in $5 cash and send it in with your learner. If it is a surprise please put it in an envelope addressed to the Conway ASB.
Second, our office staff has added a fun way to acknowledge each student's birthday. Students can visit the office for a special birthday pencil and cougar paw.
