A Note for Car Riders
For families who drive their child to and/or from school, when you arrive at Harrison Parkway, please pull up behind the existing line-up of cars instead of cutting in front of a car that is already in line. Thank you for your cooperation as we strive to ensure a safe environment.
HPE Yearbook
Purchase your 2016-17 Yearbook TODAY! Yearbooks are only $15. If you misplaced your order form, extra forms can be found in the Main Office. You can also go online to YBPAY.LIFETOUCH.COM and enter the Yearbook ID Code: 8560317 to order a book. The deadline to purchase a yearbook has been extended! The last day to pre-order a year book will now be Friday, February 24th. If your child wants one, please place your order now. There will not be another order for yearbooks after February 24th, however when the yearbooks are delivered, there may be a small number for sale, at the price of $20.00.
ISTEP Testing
Third and Fourth grade students will be taking ISTEP testing from February 27th - March 10th. It is very important that your child be at school during their testing dates/times. Please try to avoid scheduling any appointments for your child during ISTEP testing. Please check with your child's classroom teacher for exact testing times for the dates above. Thank you for your help!
HPE Music News
During the week of March 27th, parents of first grade students are invited to attend their child's music class.
A copy of letter with more information is attached to this week's newsletter for your reference.
Background checks and viewing the anti-bullying video are required of all parents who plan to attend. The link for the background check process can be found here: http://www.hse.k12.in.us/ADM/parents/volunteering.aspx
Counselor's Corner
I had the privilege of visiting the fourth grade classrooms and providing a lesson on responsibility this week. We discussed that students are responsible when they make good choices. We discussed that when they choose to be kind, they are being responsible. The students took a behavior survey that looked at bullying behaviors. We then played a game with a ball where students took turns answering questions about friendship and how to deal with bullying or bullying situations. I enjoyed visiting your child’s classroom and look forward to visit again soon.
Sincerely,
Nancy Logue
Kindergarten Enrollment for 2017-2018 School Year
Do you have a child that will be attending Kindergarten at Harrison Parkway Elementary next school year? If so, you may now enroll your child online. Please click on the link below for more information:
http://www.hse.k12.in.us/ADM/enrollment/kindergarten.aspx
Your child must be 5 years of age on or before August 1st, 2017 in accordance with the guidelines from the Indiana Department of Education in order to register for kindergarten for the 2017-2018 school year.
Mark your calendars for our Harrison Parkway Elementary Kindergarten Round-up. It will be held on Thursday April 13th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. During the open-house style event, you will be able to meet our Kindergarten teachers, tour the building, and take a short ride on a school bus!
Notes from the Nurse
As we start the new semester a few health tips:
Fever: If your child has a fever > 100.0, they MUST stay home for 24 hrs fever free without use of fever reducing medicine.
Vomiting: Any student who has vomited due to illness must stay home from school and must be vomit free for 24 hrs before returning to school
Recess: All students are expected to participate in recess each day. District Policy states that the students will go outside if the temperature is above 15 degrees with the wind shield factored in. Students not able to participate may bring a note from home or from their physician. School policy only allows a student to use a note from home for three days, after which the parent note must be replaced by a Dr’s note. Parents need to communicate any recess excuse to the nurse and the teacher.
So PLEASE, dress your child appropriately with coats, hats and mittens. You can take layers off but you can't put them on if you don't have them!
Water! Water! Water!!! Please encourage your child to drink water. It helps rejuvenate and flush the body system, and with the air so dry, it keeps the body hydrated decreasing nose bleeds. Also, please remind your child to take the time to wash their hands thoroughly! It truly helps stop germs from spreading.
Accidents happen during the day that sometimes require a change of clothes. Because we have a limited supply of clothes in the clinic, please consider packing extra clothes in your child's backpack for those mishaps. If there is no extra clothing to fit a child in need, a phone call may be made to parents requesting a change of clothes be brought in. Thank you for your help!
HPE PROCEDURES
HPE Cafeteria News
Parents please make sure you are sending money in for your child's lunch account and you may also pay online. When sending lunch money for your child please put it in an envelope with your child's name, student ID number, and teacher.
Per HSE policy students who go into the negative -$5.00 and above will receive a debit meal (choice of Turkey Sandwich or PBJ, strawberry applesauce and milk). I do my best to send email notices out every other day and you may check their balances on Skyward.
If school is on a two hour delay, we will not be serving breakfast to students-- this includes students that participate in the morning YMCA program.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
--- Mrs. Berling, Food Services Manager
Lunch with Students
If you are interested in having lunch with your student, you must call the office at 915-4210 before 9:30 am the day of your visit. We can only accommodate 10 visitors each day, so reservations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Also, you must have a current background check on file with the school. You are welcome to order a school lunch, bring a sack lunch, or you can just sit and visit. Please do not bring fast food or soda, due to various student allergies. Per HSE Policy, pictures of students are not allowed to be taken in the cafeteria and please do not use cell phones during lunch. Thank you for supporting these policies.
Attendance Line Voicemail
If your child will be absent from school, please call the HPE Attendance Line by 9:00 a.m. at 915-4210. If you know in advance that your child will be absent, you may call the attendance line's voicemail anytime and leave a message. If you know your student will be absent for more than two school days for any reason other than illness, we ask that you complete a Prearranged Absence Form (available in the HPE office) at least one week prior to the absence.
Student attendance at HPE is vitally important. Please make every attempt possible to plan appointments and vacations outside of school hours. Regular attendance improves student performance and is expected as an integral part of our state mandated School Improvement Plan.
Volunteering and the Background Check Process
Parents/visitors to HPE must have a background check on file with the school (including watching the anti-bullying video and completing the video survey) in order to volunteer in the school or to have lunch with a student. The link for the background check information can be found on link below at: http://www.hse.k12.in.us/ADM/parents/volunteering.aspx
The background checks are conducted by a 3rd party company, and there is a $13.00 fee for processing (payable online at the time of the application). Once completed, approved background checks are valid for a period of 3 years. As a new feature this year, applicants will be notified via email when their background check has been completed and they will also notify people 30 days before their background check expires.
Transportation Change During the Day
Occasionally, parents must make unplanned transportation changes during the school day. All telephone calls must be received by 2:00PM. This is to allow enough time to accurately deliver messages to teachers, as well as time to confirm the change if necessary. Please do not call the school after 2:00PM to make a transportation change except in the case of extreme emergencies.
