Greek and Latin Prefixes

5th Grade - Unit 1, Week 5

Knowing Greek and Latin prefixes can help you figure out the meaning of unfamiliar words.

What are prefixes?

Prefixes are word parts added to the beginning of a root word that change the word's meaning.

What are common Greek and Latin prefixes?

Prefixes that come from ancient Greek and Latin are common in many English words.

*dis- (means opposite)
*in- (means not)

*tele- (means distant)
*multi- (means many)

How can this help the reader?

The reader should think about what they know about the meaning of the root word and combine that with the meaning of the prefix.
