Back To School Night (Noche de regreso a clases)
Back to School Night is this Thursday, October 1, from 6:30-7:30 pm. This year you can watch teachers’ presentations ahead of time and then pop in online during the designated time to ask specific questions. All videos will be added to this link by tomorrow night for you to view. To visit a teacher online on Thursday night, go to meet.google.com and type in the teacher’s Google Meet nickname. Your student can help you. Here is the list of the nicknames, which is also on the Kennedy Middle School website under “Kennedy Distance Learning.”
Schedule Change? (¿Cambio de horario?)
Thank you to all families and students who filled out the survey regarding a schedule change. The majority of people voted to move to one of the block schedules, so we will move to a block schedule. A lot of our students are missing assignments and are struggling with the fast pace of the current schedule, so it makes sense for us to try the block schedule. While staff hates to give up seeing students everyday, they also need a change, too. There is not enough time to use the restroom between classes because the classes are bleeding into one another as they are helping students or finishing up their lesson. Also, for most teachers it takes somewhere between 2-3 hours to put together one quality lesson because they have to create slides and/or something else to capture a lot of the information being presented/taught. To do this on top of everything else four times per week just isn’t working.
I will send out a special announcement later this week with the details of the new schedule and exactly when it will start. We need a little more time to organize some things. While it would make sense to start on Monday, October 5, the issue is that Tuesday, October 6, is a Super Super Minimum Day district-wide so teachers can get in some extra training. So this will mess up the block schedule. Monday, October 12, there is no school, so this also will make it hard to start the block schedule at the beginning of that week. (I don’t want to wait until the 19th since so many are struggling). So it may be that we start this schedule on Thursday, October 8, and for the first two weeks we only have the blocks on the Thursdays and Fridays. Then after that we are in the clear until later in January where days off won’t mess up having the block schedule. I will work with staff to decide the best start date and let you know later this week.
With the block schedule, the last period of the day will end around 1:50/2:00 pm (depending on which schedule we go with). However, we will still be utilizing time until around 3:10 pm or so to work with students. (This is one of the reasons we still need a little more time to get organized). We will take a break after that last class period and then teachers will work with students generally in a more targeted manner. Students who have D’s or F’s will be expected to regularly attend assigned sessions during this time until they are solidly passing classes. Students who need or want extra help from their teachers can do so during this time. Teachers can schedule time to have writing conferences with students, work on music in a small group with students, and more. There will also be some additional enrichment opportunities offered. (I acknowledge from the survey that some of you want your students to have a longer day so they are busy while you are at home working. So this will be an option for those who need/want it).
As mentioned, one of the reasons I didn’t originally want to go with a block schedule was because for many students, math twice per week won’t be enough. (While I always worry about Language Arts, too, students do reading, writing, and speaking practice in Science and Social Studies classes, but there isn’t a lot of incorporation of math in the other subjects). I have been meeting with math teachers to make sure we can get some extra math in with the block schedule. Some will use homeroom time, some will use Wednesdays, others will use this afternoon school time. Again, more details coming, because this is not a one-size fits all model for this extra time because we have different levels of math, and we have teachers who teach part time, teachers who only teach math (some teach one level of math, some teach two), teachers who teach math and another subject, etc.
Scheduling is complicated and I think you are beginning to see that. Some of you asked in the survey why we can’t just have the core subjects in the morning and electives/PE in the afternoon. There are a few reasons for this. Teachers are part of a union, which means things need to generally be equal. So elective and PE teachers at Kennedy are equivalent to our core subject teachers because they are full time teachers. This means everyone has to teach the same amount of time/periods.Teachers can only have a certain number of students in their classes and we only get a certain number of teachers allocated. So we need PE and elective teachers teaching at the same time as core subjects in order for all students to have the classes they need throughout the day.
Now that we have switched over to Zoom we need to change the links for Wednesday PE. This will also help us to fine-tune attendance since Zoom track can when students enter and leave. Here is the sheet with the Zoom links that can also be found on our website, www.rcsdk8.net/kennedy, under “Kennedy Distance Learning.”

We are about halfway through the first trimester. Later this week we will be mailing out printouts of students’ grades so you have a snapshot of how your student is doing. Hopefully though you have been checking PowerSchool regularly so you are already familiar with these grades. If you need help setting up PowersSchool and/or learning how to use it, then please contact the office. There are some resources included below as well to assist you. A reminder that PowerSchool is constantly being updated, so when you get the printout, the grades could be a little different if any updates are made after we send out the progress report.
Supply Pick Up (Recogida de suministros)
A number of classes are finishing up their opening units and students will need some new supplies. Below are the pick up dates and times. Please drive up in front of the office. Have your student’s first and last name on a piece of paper to hold up. If you have more than one student and don’t want to make two trips, if possible please come to the older student’s pick up to get supplies for both of your students. If your student had an August or September birthday and you didn’t pick up the birthday card and little cake, you can do so during this time. We will also have all of the October birthdays ready during this pickup as well. Please note “August Birthday,” “September Birthday,” or “October Birthday” on the piece of paper with your student’s name so we know to grab the card and cake.
7th Grade Pick Up: Thursday, October 1, 12:00-1:00 pm or 3:00-5:00 pm
8th Grade Pick Up: Friday, October 2, 12:00-1:00 pm or 3:00-5:00 pm
6th Grade Pick Up: Monday, October 5, 12:00-1:00 pm or 3:00-5:00 pm
In the morning announcements on Friday I reminded students that taking pictures of the computer screen and posting them online are both against the AUP agreement that families signed at the beginning of the year as part of the Back To School Update. This could lead to suspension and police involvement. This is also a reminder that once you do something online there is a digital footprint that never goes away.
Any Extra Laptops At Home To Donate?
Want to know what your student is up to each week, what assignments are due and when? You can find all of this on teachers’ Google Sites. Go to the Kennedy Middle School Website - https://www.rcsdk8.net/kennedy, then “Kennedy Distance Learning,” and then “Teacher Google Sites.” Click on the teacher’s name and then there is a link to their Google Site. On the Google Site towards the top right you can click on “Weekly Assignments” to find out what your student is doing in class each week and what the assignments are. We are using a standard format for the weekly assignments, so you will see the same type of table/chart in this section for all teachers.
Teachers are available each week outside of class time to assist students by appointment. All teachers are available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 2:45-3:10. (Some are available longer on these days and some are available by their choice on Wednesdays). Then all teachers have a second time during the school day they can help students if and when they have some asynchronous work time. This information is on their teacher website. As more teachers are absent, there will be more asynchronous work time because subs are going to be tough to come by as we already saw this past week. (Admin will try to step in, but it is pretty difficult for us given all of the distance learning requirements we have to follow and meetings). Also, as we get homeroom more fine-tuned there will be some additional asynchronous work time as well.
