Emotional Regulation & Frustration
Behavior Intervention
Self-Regulation
Self-regulation is a skill that allows children to manage their emotions, behavior, and body movement when they encounter a challenging situation. In order to develop the skill, children must know how to calm themselves when they are upset. They must be flexible when expectations change and be able to resist giving in to frustration. This skill develops throughout childhood which is why it is common to see a tantrum in a 4 year old but not a 12 year old.

Handling Frustration & Big Emotions
During this time of at-home learning, you may have found your children feeling over-whelmed, frustrated, or disappointed. It's important to acknowledge how they are feeling and teach them coping strategies. Children often have large reactions to small problems that can be easily solved. You can discuss examples of small problems vs big problems and the level of reaction that is reasonable. You can also help them develop awareness about which emotional zone they are experiencing and strategies for feeling calm and happy. You will find resources below that can help you have these conversations as well as provide visual supports to refer back to during the day.
