High Ability: ELA Curriculum Units
Plant the Seeds of Success with the IDOE HA ELA Units GrK-10
Bring About New Student Growth this Spring!
Since 2007, Indiana Code has required Indiana school corporations to identify and serve students with high ability in the general intellectual and specific academic domains, K-12. To help better support students and staff, the Indiana Department of Education funded a high ability language arts curriculum project wherein the IDOE contracted with Dr. Joyce VanTassel-Baska to lead Indiana teachers in writing Indiana ELA Curriculum units. Using the National Association for Gifted Students’ Standards for Curriculum and Assessment, a team of teachers worked under Dr. VanTassel-Baska to develop language arts curriculum units for each grade level, K-10, that emphasizes both the Common Core Standards and 21st Century Skills. By so doing, the project is designed to address all aspects of state requirements, differentiation issues for the gifted, and future needs of students in preparing for the world of the professions.
Morning Goals (9:00 - 11:30 a.m.):
- Develop an understanding of the elements needed in high ability curriculum, including a comprehensive view of effective models to develop critical and creative thinking
- Gain a more holistic view of the common curriculum unit facets, unveiling the cohesive vertical articulation inherent across grade levels
Afternoon Goals (12:30 -3:00 p.m.):
- Gain a deeper understanding by digging into specific grade level curriculum.
- Collaboratively work with other team members to align the ELA curriculum to their district grade level curriculum maps
- Dissect the grade level lesson plans within the units and fertilize new growth for their students by planning learning experiences that will enhance, support, and reinforce the units.
