Lucy's Library Blast
April 3, 2017
April is School Library Month!
We will have activities going on all month such as a:
The Library Challenge form from NPL in which kids can come by the library and pick up a form they fill in with answers from a variety of questions about literature, databases, and even designing a t-shirt that promotes the library. Winners will receive an ipad Mini and the overall winner will get a behind-the-scenes tour of the main NPL with lunch. Also all students who turn in a completed form will have their NPL fines waived!
The Book Mark Competition is always a popular challenge in which students may design a book mark following specific guidelines set by Limitless Libraries.
The forms for these challenges are in the library. All forms must be in by April 21st.
Libraries are fortunate in Metro to have incredible support from the district as well as the amazing resources from Nashville Public Library. However, this is not true for everyone. As part of School Library month, I'd like to share the following article from the Chicago Tribune about school librarians and a dystopian society. If you are a fan of Ray Bradbury, it offers much to be thought about - perhaps even discussed in the classroom. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/ct-school-librarians-cuts-dystopia-perspec-0330-jm-20170329-story.html
April is also Poetry Month

Edna St. Vincent Millay
Edward Lear
Carl Sandburg
Rudyard Kipling
Virginia Hamilton
William Shakespeare
Robert Browning
Roald Dahl
Lewis Carrol
Robert Lewis Stevenson
Jack Prelutsky
Maya Angelou
Below are a selection of poetry activities:
Thumbprint Poetry
Thumbprint Poetry students create a poem following the whorls of a thumb print. These can be done free-form or you can download blank ones with just the lines for easier writing.
Blackout Poetry
Black-out Poetry students take a page of text from a ruined, no longer readable (why waste a book?) book and black out all or almost all of the words except the ones you want to use for your poem.
Collage Poetry
Collage Poetry students cut out words from old printed material: magazines, newspapers, pamphlets, ads, photocopies, junk mail, etc. and glue them to a sturdy base, such as a paper plate to create a short poem. 3-dimensional accessories can be added for impact.
Hands-On Poetry
Hands-on Poetry students trace their hand and write a descriptive phrase or series of words about themselves.
This can also be done by drawing a silhouette of their head and calling it a Selfie Poem.
Magnetic Poetry
Magnetic Poetry student cut out words and glue them onto magnetic strips that can be moved around on metal surface (such as a cookie sheet) to create different phrases. These can be made or purchased premade.
Poetry Slam
Poetry Slam is a competition at which performance artists (students) read or recite original work. There can be a panel of judges or it can be done just for individual expression.
Are your students writing their own poetry?
