Bear Counseling Corner
October 2021
Welcome Back CVHS Community!!
The Counseling Department welcomes all new and returning students and families to Central Valley High School for the 2021-22 school year. We look forward to a positive and productive year, despite the uncertainties that the Covid-19 pandemic presents.
Trust that we will do all we can to ensure that your experience at CVHS is one that you will cherish and reflect on positively for the rest of your life. For freshmen coming from middle school, we look forward to getting to know you and helping you make a successful transition to high school.
We feel that in a large comprehensive high school, it is important to communicate information in a timely and effective manner. This monthly newsletter is intended to give you a summary of important grade level counseling information which should be useful in making plans and navigating high school as well as life after graduation. Some sections will recur every month with new updates while other sections will change depending on the focus of the month. If you have any questions, please contact the counselor assigned to work with you. Our contact information can be found at the bottom of this newsletter and on our counseling website.

Hopes and Fears
During Ignite Freshman Night, students shared their hopes and desires for this school year along with their fears and worries…some common themes were:
Hopes:
- Good grades
- Joining clubs/activities/sports
- Games
- New classes

Fears:
- Making friends

HELPFUL LINKS
CLASS OF 2024
As 10th graders, experiencing your first “normal” year of high school, I want each of you to focus on establishing a routine and learning how to be a high school student with a full schedule! I’ve listed off some helpful tips and strategies for asking for help/staying organized.
Study Tips
When in doubt, the #1 person to start with is your teacher! -- When can you access them? Before school, after school, during designated work time in class. Email is also a great way to connect with your teacher.
Keep track of assignments and due dates using a planner, the calendar app on your phone, a Reminders app (apple) or the Google Tasks: Get Things Done app.
Check PowerSchool; stay on top of any missing assignments by checking your grades in PowerSchool.
Find a friend to study with - teach the material to a friend as a way to study what you’re learning; swap notes that you have taken in class.
Find a desk or table in your house that allows you to stay focused; studying on your bed can be comfortable but it is NOT the best place to study.
Take Breaks - When you find yourself studying for long periods of time, make sure to take study breaks.
Every day, review all the new information you learned in school earlier that day. A quick review (20 minutes) of key concepts can help you stay on top of the material and ensure understanding. This is a great tip for test prep that doesn’t involve cramming!
Clean your backpack regularly.
Get a good night’s sleep!
Stop by if you want to discuss any more helpful tips!

CLASS OF 2023
Happy Fall, Class of 2023! Junior year is such an exciting time and I’m looking forward to working with each of you this year. I know it’s been a big adjustment, getting used to attending six classes again, but we’re so happy to have you all back in the building all day. Please remember that it is very important to communicate right away if you are beginning to fall behind in classes. I am here to help, so please let me know how to best support you. Throughout the year, I’ll be sending information through your school email account, along with the Google Classroom for the Class of 2023, so please check both of these very regularly.
In the Junior year, it’s important for students to narrow down their interests and start setting goals. During this year, students will continue to create post-secondary plans, based on their interests and career goals. I’d encourage all Juniors to attend the upcoming T-2-4 Fair, on October 5th. This is a great opportunity to explore a great variety of college and career options.
