Indian Creek Elementary - January 15, 2016
Principal's Message
With the month of February quickly approaching I want to take some time to inform all our families on the upcoming state assessment, ISTEP+. The purpose of the Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress Plus (ISTEP+) program is to measure student achievement in the subject areas of Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science (Grades 4 and 6), and Social Studies (Grades 5 and 7). ISTEP+ reports student achievement levels according to the Indiana Academic Standards. There are two rounds of testing. An Applied Skills open-ended Assessment (Part 1) and a Multiple-Choice and Technology-Enhanced item Assessment (Part 2) are used to measure these standards. Round 1, Applied Skills, is completed using paper and pencil and will be taken between February 29th and March 11. Round 2, Multiple Choice, is done online from April 18th to May 6th.
Our third graders have an additional state assessment called IREAD. The purpose of the Indiana Reading Evaluation And Determination (IREAD-3) assessment is to measure basic reading skills through grade three. Based on the Indiana Academic Standards, IREAD-3 is an assessment developed because of Public Law 109, it "requires the evaluation of reading skills for students who are in grade three beginning in the Spring of 2012 to ensure that all students can read proficiently before moving on to grade four." Third graders take this online assessment between March 14th and March 18th. IREAD test samples are available HERE.
You can find additional information on both of these state assessments at www.doe.in.gov/assessment.
What can you do to prepare your child for these assessments:
1) Help to make sure they are completing their nightly homework
2) Encourage their nightly reading
3) Make sure your child is here at school, on time, each and every day
4) Try not to schedule appointments during these testing days, students often test best when they are with their own teacher and in a familiar place
5) Help children to get to bed on time so they are ready to work hard at school
If you are not receiving weekly Sunday messages via email please contact the office at 964-4400.

Hello, my name is Shameka Alford. As of last May, I was warmly welcomed to work as an Administrative Assistant for Indian Creek. I have several years’ experience in education, including substitute teaching and directing a Before/After Care program. Over the past few months, I have really enjoyed working with the students and families of Indian Creek as well as its wonderful supportive staff. I hope to be able to grow and serve our community for many more years to come.

PLEASE REMEMBER!
If you have changes to your student's dismissal procedures, they must be called into the office prior to 1:30. This will ensure an ample amount of time for the communication to be properly delivered. Also don’t forget that all parent visits with the classroom teacher must be scheduled in advance to avoid interrupting the learning environment. If you would like to schedule a parent teacher conference please contact your classroom teacher directly or call the main office at 964-4400. Thank you!
Box Tops
Please continue to cut and save Box Tops. The top two classes that turn in the most box tops by Friday, Jan. 29th will earn a pizza party from Puccini's!
Each box top earns 10 cents and can be used as cash to purchase items for our school. Last year we earned over $2000. They add up quickly! More Box Tops means more money for the school programs that enrich our students' learning! Collection sheets can be found here.
