Seeking Mentors for Thrive, Jr.
Dear Parents and Community Members,
This year at Hixson, groups of seventh and eighth-grade students are participating in an exciting entrepreneurial elective class that requires students to develop business plans, create products, pricing, packaging, budgets, sales strategies and more. In order to provide an authentic experience to students and support them with someone with expertise in the business world, we are looking for individuals willing to volunteer and visit the classroom via Zoom as mentors.
Business mentors would collaborate with the teacher to facilitate learning for student groups by coaching the groups on various aspects of entrepreneurship. Typically, mentors would share experiences and guidance with small groups rather than instructing lecture-style.
If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please either email Randy Rachal (rachal.randy@wgmail.org), the teacher of this course. He will reach out to you and discuss which days and hours are best to Zoom in, but expect to Zoom for 40 minutes once a week. This year the class is offered from 9:20 am to 10:00 am and 1:50 pm to 2:30 pm; therefore, mentors could volunteer for a single semester, class period, or more if desired. You will also fill the Raptor Parent volunteer form at: https://apps.raptortech.com/Apply/NTk0OmVuLVVT
Thank you for your support and partnership in creating innovative opportunities for our students. Please contact me via email or phone by September 29th, if you are interested in becoming a mentor. You will receive training and additional information from me.
Sincerely,
Randy Rachal
Kona Ice to Visit Hixson - September 29, 2023!
Culture and Climate
In continuation of our efforts to support the academic and personal well-being of each student, district culture and climate surveys will be administered to students in grades 3-12, families, and staff. Surveys will solicit participants' perspectives about learning strategies, culture and climate, and experiences in the classroom and/or school.
The surveys will allow for students, families and staff to offer feedback specifically about school safety, their sense of belonging, teacher-student relationships, cultural awareness and diversity and inclusion. For comparison purposes, the same surveys from 2022-2023 will be used this year.
The survey window for students and families will be October 2-13, 2023 and March 25-April 5, 2024.
To learn more, including survey previews, aggregate data from last year, and how you can exclude your child from participating in the surveys if you choose to, click here.

BRIDGing Our Stories
The BRIDGING Our Stories - (Building.Relationships.Inclusion.Diversity.Growth) program allows WGSD middle and high school students and staff to tell their stories through art. Students and staff members can express themselves through art such as poetry, photography, music, dance, painting, etc. These creative expressions will be placed in a Community Gallery for the public to view, learn, and appreciate. In addition, the art will be used in a professional development session for staff to learn about the power of storytelling, relationship building, and building community. The grants are able to cover funding for some art supplies. Students will be asked a year later to share how being a part of the project impacted their classroom experiences. This program is grant-funded by the WGSD Foundation and Lindenwood University.
Your student can register by clicking HERE. All artwork must be submitted by October 1, 2023. For additional information or questions, please contact Dr. Williamson at williamson.shane@wgmail.org.
