Term 4 Week 8 - 1 December
FROM MARK:
Dear Parents and Guardians,
This lovely reflection on Christmas comes from Alex Byrne – and it is just perfect. Thank you Alex!
Congratulations Rob Flexman on a fabulous faction swimming carnival on Monday! Children had a lot of fun, and were engaged all day. Thanks to all staff who were involved. Likewise the huge number of parents who helped in every way possible. Rob would be the first to say that without you the carnival would not have been what it was. Your support is very much appreciated.
Here’s assuming that the 40 plus people who attended Leanna’s Monday night thank you dinner for parents and extended family who have helped in the canteen this year all had a great time! With Leanna as your host, how could it be any different! Thank you for a great year of support for Leanna and that awesome canteen. Again, it would not be what it is without you.
Today we had not one but two concerts! The children in our Three Year Old Kindy, and our Siena Centre were in awesome form today! Many proud parents and guardians had the opportunity to celebrate is style! Thank you to all of our staff involved in these concerts which were quite remarkable. No small measure of preparation is required to make these memorable moments happen!
Reports from last week’s AGM are included for your information.
A big week next week – hang on for the ride!
Have a good weekend.

Further to the Calendar next week:
- Mr Winton will be weaving our Advent prayers throughout the week, commencing with a prayer in the Veritas Garden at 9am. Thank you Pat.
- On Monday night, commencing with mass at 5pm, we celebrate the Graduation of our Year Six students. Much has gone in to preparations for this evening, and we know that it will be a special time for them.
- Our concert on Tuesday our ‘Big Day In’ - starts promptly at 6pm and will take place in the Dominican Playground. We get to use the grass for one night! We would like the children seated in position at 5.45. so that we can start on time. Lots of families bring a picnic and set up well beforehand, which is fine. We welcome your presence! Please ensure children are appropriately supervised. We don’t want any accidents! Our Awards this year for children in each class (two per class) will be for Making Jesus Real. We look forward to celebrating their very special contribution to our school.
- Wednesday is our ‘Big Day Out’ with all classes away to celebrate the year. All details for the respective excursions have been in circulation for some time, so all should be familiar with what is planned for each grade.
- Thursday is a regular school day, a quiet one which provides children with time to regroup, and compete the last of their work.
- Friday, the last day of term, is a free dress (gold coin donation for Caritas) day. Plans for the day include our final school mass in the morning, celebrating our year. It is also a solemnity – The Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Other plans for the day include for example, the final cleanup, removal of desks depending on classes receiving new furniture, followed by their end of year class party. Reports go live on Friday as well at 2pm. If you have any queries about your child’s report you are welcome to make contact through the office to make a time to see your child’s teacher on Monday December 11.
- The student free week provides us with the opportunity to update staff qualifications, with a large number renewing First Aid qualifications, and all staff reviewing our Quality Catholic Schools data. A 'Child Safety' presentation will also take place. Teachers meeting together in order to ensure a comprehensive class handover is also a really important activity and we are joined by our new teachers.
- A lot of maintenance and compliance activities are also undertaken in preparation for the following year. This is a valuable week for us, and really gives everyone the opportunity to get their ducks in a row ready for 2018.
Student Leadership 2018
During this term all the Year 5’s have been participating in a Leadership Program in preparation for being leaders of our school for next year. They have been involved in weekly class sessions and a Leadership Day.
The Student Leadership Model at Holy Rosary includes: 8 School Leaders, 8 Faction Captains, and 10 Library Monitors.
In Year 6 all the children are involved in Council Groups each term:- Social Justice, Environment, Pastoral and Community Service.
All the Year 5’s were given an opportunity to nominate themselves for any of the above positions. The Student Leaders are selected at his time and at the beginning of next year, the Faction Captains and the Library Monitors are decided upon. At the First School Mass for the beginning of the year all the badges will be blessed and presented to these students. This year thirty-one year 5’s nominated for a Student Leader position and presented their speeches yesterday to their peers as well asYear 4’s. I was extremely impressed with the quality of all their speeches, as were their teachers. All
the children who nominated for these positions are to be congratulated for their outstanding efforts.
The student Leaders for 2018 are:
Eva Dias-Kelly
Joseph Dimattina
Ashley Gardener

REPORTS FROM AGM - Wednesday 22 November
BOOKLISTS
Dear Parents,
We have had a couple of queries recently regarding booklists for 2018. While there is a change to where the resources are delivered and therefore an increased importance on the orders being placed by the 8th of December, everything else stays the same. If you have left over supplies from last year and wish to re-use them, please subtract these from your order and bring them in to school towards the end of 2017, or on the first day of 2018.
As we said in our letter home, teachers will return all non-consumable items with their students at the end of the year and have done their best to get the quantities correct, so as to not have too much left over.

RE NEWS
RE NEWS
WHAT IS ADVENT?
Advent is the season that begins the liturgical year. It consists of four Sundays starting with the Sunday closest to November 30th. The word advent is derived from the Latin adventus, which means "coming" or "arrival." For Christians, Advent is the time when the church patiently prepares for the coming of the King of Kings, Jesus Christ.
WHAT IS THE CHURCH'S FOCUS DURING ADVENT?
Advent is the first part of a larger liturgical season that includes Christmas and Epiphany and continues until the beginning of Lent. Even though Advent occurs in the month of December and is usually considered to be a prelude to Christmas, it is not simply about waiting for the birth of Christ. We celebrate Advent to remind us of God, that God is in our -- past, present, and future. First, we remember the Lord's humble first coming in Bethlehem two thousand years ago. Second, we give thanks for His present and continual coming to us through Word and Sacrament. Finally, we look forward with hope and longing to His second coming in glory to judge the living and the dead on the Last Day.
Holy Rosary Swimming Carnival
On November 27 the Holy Rosary Swimming Carnival was held at HBF Stadium for all students in Years 3 -6. There was a fantastic vibe on the day and all of the students gave 110% in each team and individual event. After a full day of strong swimming Gold once again proved to be just too strong taking first place from Blue.
I would like to thank all of the fantastic parents and all the members of the wonderful Holy Rosary staff. You all worked so hard on the day to make sure everything ran smoothly, your help as always is greatly appreciated.

Many hands make light work
We are blessed at Holy Rosary to have a parent community that is very connected to the school. On any given day, we have parents helping in class, the canteen, arranging social events, fundraising, running sporting clubs, updating our Facebook, and enjoying the friendship and support one finds in an inclusive community.
Class Reps
How would we get through the year without you? We are so grateful for all you do!
Canteen
We have all had those mornings when there is no fresh bread in the house for school lunch. Thank you to every parent who volunteers at Canteen, and to Leanna for running it.
Parent Community
Our parents have been extremely busy this year with some major fundraising events. Our thanks to Simon Devlin (President); Nathan Byrne (Vice President); Peter Devlin (Treasurer and Grandad!); Al King (Secretary); and Mark Nolan (Board Rep); event organiser extraordinaire Michelle Della Franca and her amazing helpers; Kristie Denham and Sue Griffin on news and Facebook; and David Broadway for stunning photos of our sporting events.
Business Community
Our thanks to everyone who has supported the businesses of Holy Rosary this year. Thanks toGillian Gavin on design and Ryan Chatfield on video for their work in letting us know how we can support businesses within our school community.
School Board
Our School Board works quietly in the background helping navigate our school through broader challenges such as infrastructure and funding. Our sincere thanks to Jonathon Woolfrey (Board Chair); Deb Noblett (Secretary); Ross Tolley (Treasurer); Kathy Blitz-Cokis, and Mark Nolan and Rohan Mascarenhas.
As they say… many hands make light work.
Holy Rosary Swimming Carnival
Holy Rosary certainly made a splash today at HBF Challenge Stadium. What a great event, with everyone having a go and doing their best. Gold faction made waves coming out tops; second place went to brilliant Blue; followed by rippling Red and then gliding Green.
We thank Rob Flexman for all his hard work arranging the event; the teachers and parents for helping out; supporters; and of course, all the children who dived in and gave of their best in the pool.
Please keep supporting our school’s events and fundraisers!

GENERAL NOTICES
Rosary Care Coordinator
Just a little note to the whole school community. I have had the privilege of being in this wonderful community for 16 years. For most of them I have held the role of Rosary Care Coordinator. This is a special link between the Parish and School to offer short term assistance to those of our community in need.
As this is my last year at the school (my youngest of five graduates this year) I will relinquish my role. This wonderful role will be taken up by Mrs Lisa
Vilé commencing in 2018.
I thank you all for the community spirit of love and care you show to each other and pray this spirit continues to thrive in your midst.
Thank you all and God bless,
Terese Johnston.
