Common Core? What is it?

The Common Core is the set of standards by which I teach. They are relatively new to the state of Georgia, and they are considered more rigorous than our previous set of standards.

During Curriculum Night you will get a handbook that will explain exactly what standards will be taught during 5th grade.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask. In the meantime, watch the video below to get a further understanding of the beginnings of Common Core.

The Georgia Milestone? What is it?

The Georgia Milestones (GMP) replaced the CRCT last year for the first time. It is Georgia state's new end-of-year comprehensive test. It is the test that assesses the learning of the Common Core.

Let me tell you about Myself...

All About Me_Miss Powell

My name is Miss. Powell. I am British, and I always feel I need to say that early on, because my accent is a dead giveaway.

I came to Georgia about ten years ago and never went home! Home, by the way is London. I was born and raised in London.

I attended University of East London and then went on to South Bank University to complete my teaching certificate. When I came to Georgia, I completed my masters degree in Integrating the Arts into the Curriculum. I have been teaching for eleven years, but it really feels like I became a teacher a couple of years ago. I think that's a good thing, because I continue to grow as a teacher, because learning and teaching are a life long pursuit.

I love art. I love visual art, movement, drama, and any other artforms. I hope to use art in my classroom because I strongly believe it is a universal vehicle of expression.

I have no pets. I have no biological children. I feel my students are loaned to me for one year, and I will take very good care of them!

I love learning and I love watching my students learn. My classroom is where we explore, make mistakes, learn from those mistakes, try again, find amazing new discoveries and have fun in the journey. We are a learning community. We are family.
