Preview New School-Accountability Measures
Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) invites the public to learn about new Maryland school-accountability measures at any of four regional meetings. The one-hour meetings will give the community opportunities to find out about Maryland's new state-issued star ratings for schools, to preview the new format of state-issued school report cards and to learn about new school-accountability standards.
Thursday, November 1 at Catoctin High
Monday, November 12 at Brunswick High
Monday, November 19 at Middletown High
"In Frederick County, we work to empower all our students to receive an outstanding education," says Superintendent Dr. Terry Alban. "While test scores are one important measure of Maryland's new accountability plan, there are others included, like access to a great curriculum, attendance, school climate, college and career readiness, and student growth over time."
Based on all these factors, the state will give each school a numerical score and a simple star rating, on a scale of one through five stars. These will appear on the new report card that the state issues for each school.
After the Maryland State Department of Education issues the new school report cards in December, FCPS will hold additional meetings in each high school feeder pattern to help parents understand the new factors that help measure school performance and to empower each school community to work together to equip students for success.

Counselor News
Students have been learning the importance of being an “Everyday Hero” through Character Counts topics, bullying lessons, Red Ribbon week, and Zones of Regulation lessons this month. I have been busy in classrooms teaching students about all of these topics and will continue to deliver lessons each month to help students be the best that they can be. Please let me know if your child has specific social/emotional needs that I can assist with. Look for information during conference time about small groups that will address various needs, such as social skills, how to control emotions, changing families, and more.
Something new to our school is the “Zones of Regulation.” This curriculum was designed to foster self-regulation and emotional control. Students have been learning how every person goes through different “Zones” or emotions. We have been working on identifying how we feel by attaching it to a color zone. For example, when we are calm and ready to learn, we are in the “Green Zone.” When we are feeling sick or tired, we are in the “Blue Zone.” If we are feeling worried or frustrated, we are in the “Yellow Zone.” If we are angry or out of control, we are in the “Red Zone.” Students are doing a fantastic job identifying the different zones.
Teaching students about their emotions is a critical skill! Through purposeful lessons, students have been able to identify feelings and emotions. We have also been working on how our bodies and facial expressions give us signs about how we are feeling and how others are feeling. Expected behaviors, such as following directions or completing class work and unexpected behaviors, such as yelling during class or throwing materials, have also been explored. Finding appropriate ways to regul
