Who Do You Say I Am?

Megan Hamori, Scripture II, Block E

Matthew 16:13-20

Jesus is, in my opinion, the most important icon of Christianity. It reminds people that they have someone that they can relate to and rely on. But, without both a visual image and idea of personality of Jesus, it can be harder to grow close to Him. In these verses, Jesus is officially established as the messianic son of God through Peter's epiphany. Although he establishes the Apostolic Succession and structure of the Church institution, I believe that the deeper meaning of this passage is someone, incapable of knowing who Jesus really is, can identify him as the Son of God. This passage proves that Jesus will reveal himself to us, just as God revealed Jesus' identity to Peter. An insight that I gained from reading the footnotes of this passage is that this passage truly marks the start of the Church. Jesus establishes Peter as the first ever Pope, to be carried on for thousands of years through Apostolic Succession today.

Bible Verse #1

Galatians 3:28 - There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

This Bible verse is very important to me because I think that it truly outlines what Jesus stood for and advocated during His lifetime. One of my favorite things about Jesus is that He is extremely accepting. He does not see color of skin, or gender, or handicaps. All He sees is the kind of person you are within the heart. In my own life, I am constantly advocating for both gender equality and equal rights for all, and because Jesus was someone able to look past certain things that may cause discrimination, I can also follow His example.

Bible Verse #2

Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.

This passage is very meaningful to me because it reminds me that no matter what I do or where I go, or what circumstance I am in, God is always with me. He protects me through any type of hardship that I may suffer, which gives me an extreme sense of comfort because I know that even if things go terribly wrong, God is there to help me back up. The aspect of Jesus being constantly there with us is comforting, adding to His kindness and love for all people.
