Why Estuaries Are Important

Estuaries are known as the nurseries of the sea because they provide a protected environment and lots of food for plants and animals to flourish.

The Croatan Sound connects to the Albemarle, Pamlico, and Currituck Sounds. It is fed by Spencer Creek, Callaghan Creek, and Deep Ware Point Inlet.

Threats to North Carolina Estuaries

Threats to N.C. estuaries include dredging, wetland drainage, global warming, pollution, excess nutrients, and asphyxiation due to plant overgrowth.
