WHPE July/August Update
THANK YOU!
Thank you to everyone who contacted their representatives to the state legislature. We have dodged a huge bullet when the state legislature dropped their ill conceived "loosening of state teacher licensure" amendment to the state budget. Let's set aside that the amendment should NEVER have been part of a state budget, it would have been a huge blow to teacher quality in our state.
In June we asked everyone by email and through this publication to contact their representatives in the state legislature to oppose this budget amendment. Keith Bakken went to the state legislature to talk with senators and representatives of the state assembly. Other members of the association also went to the state legislature, in person, by phone and with emails. We were told that many of the representatives had received well over a 1,000 communications in opposition to this budget amendment.
I can say that I believe that Wisconsin Health and Physical Education was a leader in opposing this amendment, not because of what was done by the board and Keith but really, by what was done by all of you. Thank you! You made the difference this summer.
The scary news is that we don't think that this attack is over. We think it will come up again and we need to be vigilant. Please continue to talk to your representatives. Invite them to your programs for them to see why we need teachers who have earned degrees in the content to provide high quality education for our students!
Keep up the good work and have a great start to the school year everyone!
See you at the Kalahari in October!
Sincerely,
Brett Fuller
