Volume 1, Issue 22 - February 2, 2018

Dear Families,

I want to remind you that there will be no school on Monday, February 5th, as it is a Professional Development day for teachers. While your students spend the long weekend at home, encourage them to take advantage of the free time to interact with friends and family members. As this article discusses, kids that play sports, go outside, and interact with people in real life (IRL), are happier than those that spend more time in social media, texting, or playing on their phones/video game system. It is always about balance... kids can still enjoy digital time and be healthy, just make sure it is not the only thing they do!

6th/7th Grade Elective Course Selection

Our guidance counselors will be visiting 6th and 7th grade Social Studies classrooms next week (February 5th-9th) to present information about elective course selection for next year. Students will bring home a course selection packet after this presentation for parents to review with their students. In this packet, you will find a course selection sheet which will need to be completed, signed by a parent, and returned to your student's Social Studies teachers no later than Thursday, February 15th. The information from this packet will also be posted on the GMS website homepage for your convenience.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Please mark your calendar for our upcoming parent teacher conferences that will be occurring on Tuesday, February 13th and Thursday, February 15th from 3:30-7:00 pm. You should be receiving more info from the teachers. There will be no school on February 16th.

Students learn from the Fire Dept

The Columbia Fire Dept came to GMS’s 7th grade science classes to teach students how fire flow through a home due to the amount of oxygen and fuel available. Students were taught about the chemical reactions that can occur in their homes to create these fires and what they can do to prevent them. CFD did a great job of teaching and engaging students even though at one point it started raining on us...and on the house he had lit on fire!

K-8 Chess Tournament

2018 Columbia Elementary & Middle School Scholastic Chess Tournament, for grades K through 8, will be held at Lange Middle School on Saturday, February 17, 2018 from 8:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Reminder - Track & Field

Our head track and field coach will be hosting a parent/student informational meeting on Tuesday, February 6th from 6:30-7:30 in the Gentry cafe'. If your 7th/8th grade student is interested in being a part of the GMS track and field team, please plan on attending this meeting. Our coach will be presenting information on: required MSHSAA paperwork, student/athlete expectations, practice and meet/invitational schedules, etc. Hope to see you there!
