From Alexa- Staffing News
I started my week by spending the day with our 4th/5th graders in Newport. It was such a gift to explore tide pools, observe baby seals, learn about tides, and watch the Yurt groups plan their meals and shop at Fred Meyer. Thank you to all the volunteers who made this trip a success.
Thank you also to the MLC community for showering us with love and appreciation all week for Teacher Appreciation. We enjoyed delicious meals and lots of treats throughout the week. I definitely gained 5lbs:)
Next week is portfolio week for high school! Check with your high school student, and have them share their portfolios with you and practice their presentation. Also, we have 7x8 heading to Ashland, Kx3 going to Frog and Toad, and a PTSA meeting on Thursday!
It’s always hard to believe how quickly May sneaks up--I’m not sure how the year slipped away so quickly. As we are wrapping up the 2017-2018 school year, we are also preparing for the 2018-2019 school year. Part of this preparing includes staffing for next year.
I am excited to announce the following staffing changes and additions:
- Sarah Walden will be moving from 1st/2nd grade to Kindergarten. Sarah began her teaching career working as an early childhood educator and she is thrilled to work with our MLC kinders.
- Avril Munro will be moving to 1st/2nd grade. She taught MLC 1st/2nd graders for many years and she is looking forward to teaching this age group again.
- John Walrod is taking a half-time childcare leave next year, and fortunately will still be at MLC half time. He is moving into the role of learning specialist which is where he started his career at MLC.
- We hired Rebecca Wagner to teach 1st/2nd grade. Rebecca is a beloved Sunnyside Environmental School teacher. She has taught middle school and kindergarten, but most of her teaching has been in 1st/2nd grade classes. She has extensive experience in Storyline, experiential and place-based learning, and culturally responsive teaching. We are so lucky to have her coming to MLC.
- In library news, Kiva is taking a personal leave next year because her family is moving to Boston for the year. It's a fantastic opportunity for her family, but we will miss her at MLC! For next year, we hired Tini Maier as our .5 media specialist. We will share Tini with Jackson Middle School where she has been a medial specialist for the last several years. Helen Nolan, our substitute assistant principal, hired Tini for her first medial specialist job at Buckman in 2005! We are so excited to have her join MLC team.
Please note that we will not be taking specific teacher requests. You are welcome to email your current teacher to share information about teaching styles that best fit your child or any information that you'd like our team to consider when making class placements. Our team will be very thoughtful about this process as we build our 1st/2nd grade classes.
We are still wrapping up a couple more hires in the high school, and I will announce high school changes before we leave for summer.
Please join me as we welcome some wonderful, new folks into the MLC community. I am truly looking forward to a fantastic school year!

MLC 50th Anniversary
Dear MLC alumni, parents, teachers, students, administrators, volunteers, and aides from all 50 years of MLC’s existence:
To celebrate where we have been and where we are headed, we will celebrate MLC's 50th birthday with a daylong festival at MLC on September 15, 2018 from 1-7pm. The day will be filled with alumni reunions, history displays, history gathering, video screenings, art and craft activities, merchandise for sale, and music. Our evening panel discussion will feature Lewis Holland, Susan Beaird, Pam Shelly, Lee Gordon (TBD) and MLC founder Emil Abramovic’s son, Karl. Senator Lew Frederick will give the evening's keynote address.
The event is free but tickets are required for the panel discussion ($10).
