Can You Canva? Graphic Design for School Librarians March 7, 2017

As library workers, we often promote our services, programs, and events through displays, flyers, posters, signs, and other visual outputs.
No design experience? No problem!
This workshop will introduce attendees to a useful and easy to use graphic design tool, Canva. Attendees will have the opportunity to work hands on with Canva in order to make a flyer to visually communicate their library programs and services. This workshop will teach you not only how to utilize Canva, but how to have fun while creating graphic design projects for your library.
CTLE certificates will be provided at the end of the workshop.

Supporting the Social Emotional Health of English Language Learners March 16-17, 2017
For many of our SIFE and/or Refugee students, regular one-on-one counseling does not suffice in meeting their social-emotional needs to fully integrate into our American schools. At this session, Dr. Jan Stewart offers ways that teachers can create meaningful social/emotional support in classrooms, especially for those who have experienced trauma and loss, who are English language learners, SIFE and/or Refugees. Books will be provided for those who attend. Dinner is provided on March 16, 2017 with Continental Breakfast & Lunch provided on March 17,2017. Attendance at both sessions is required. PLEASE REGISTER NO LATER THAN MARCH 1st.
Kahoot! Workshop: March 21, 2017

Kahoot! is a free game-based learning platform, which can be accessed on any mobile device without usernames and passwords. Designed to be accessible to classrooms and other learning environments worldwide, Kahoot!'s learning games ("kahoots") can be created by anyone, for any subject and for learners of any age. As Kahoot! may be played using any device, desktop or laptop with a web browser, it is rapidly gaining traction in classes with ""bring your own device"" policies. Users in this overview will be introduced to Kahoot and see how it can be used in the classroom.

Thinking About Thinking: Metacognition, Executive Functioning and Cognitive Science March 23-24, 2017

Thinking about Thinking: Metacognition, executive functioning, and cognitive science are three of the ways we try to describe what's happening in our brains as we learn and think about that learning. Join your colleagues for a two-day institute organizing around better understanding students' - and your - brain.
The program will focus on challenging common myths around learning, supporting students with disabilities to take more control over their school experience, and how to design lessons, units, and assessments to better support students' brains. The institute will include input on the latest research on neuroscience, work sessions, text-based discussions, and peer review. Participants will leave the institute with strategies for both the short and long-term.

RBE-RN Collegial Circle: March 29, 2017
Join the W-FL BOCES SLS and the RBE-RN (Regional Bilingual Education Network) in this after school collegial circle focused on using library media resources to support content and cultural learning opportunities for ELL students and ESOL teachers. Please invite your district ESOL teachers to attend; pizza and snacks will be provided. This is a great way to build relationships with ESOL teachers!

Inspired Collaboration: An Introduction to Tapping Your Library’s Potential: March 30, 2017
This workshop will focus on key methods and knowledge that librarians need in order to transform library partnerships and collaborations – inside and outside the library organization - into dynamic relationships to invigorate community engagement and learning. We will also explore ways for librarians to make good decisions regarding setting right priorities for their library’s level of staffing, funding, and collaborative starting point.

Implementing Creative Coding through Games and Apps: March 31, 2017

This hands-on, 1-day MIE Academy prepares you to teach Creative Coding through Games and Apps (CCGA) in middle or early secondary classroom settings. The workshop provides an accelerated overview of the full course and student curriculum. If you have the opportunity and desire to bring foundational coding skills to your students, this workshop is for you! At the completion of this workshop, you will:
• Be introduced to Touch Develop and the span of coding concepts addressed in the course. Exposure to coding concepts and Touch Develop will be introductory and not comprehensive. Participants will require further self-study beyond the two-day workshop to gain sufficient additional knowledge and skill to be ready to fully integrate Touch Develop into teaching the course.
• Understand how to use all the course materials. This includes making use of suggested teaching strategies, addressing learning challenges that students may encounter, preparing and presenting lessons, and providing students' all necessary resources.
• Understand how to teach the course. This includes the general teaching approach, flexibility in time to deliver the course, and flexible use of course online lessons.
• Understand further preparations that may be needed to be ready to teach the course. This includes gaining proficiency in Touch Develop, gaining knowledge about coding concepts to stay one step ahead, and further study of the course resources to be ready to use them on a daily basis.
