STANWOOD HIGH SCHOOL
FAMILY UPDATE FOR WEEK OF MAY 22nd, 2023
SHS VISION STATEMENT
Stanwood Spartans are united in cultivating character, modeling respect, teaching leadership and connecting to community.

We have selected Corie Gudgeon as an incoming Assistant Principal at Stanwood High School, starting July 1.
She is coming to us from Sedro-Woolley High School where she serves as an Assistant Principal and the Career & Technical Education (CTE) director. Prior to that, she held a variety of education and leadership roles at Everett Public Schools for 19 years.
Mrs. Gudgeon graduated from Stanwood High in 1996. She has earned a Bachelor of Arts in Health/Fitness Education and a Bachelor of Science in Fitness and Sports Management from Central Washington University, and a Master’s in Education and Curriculum from Antioch University in Seattle.
She is exceptionally strong and well-versed in instructional practices, inclusive practices, and ways to elevate and navigate issues of race and equity. During her career she has maintained a focus on providing high quality education opportunities to help all students be prepared for the future of their choice.
A diverse team composed of members of the community, staff, students, and the District Equity Team helped guide candidate interviews. Mrs. Gudgeon will replace Mrs. Coombs, who has been an Assistant Principal at Stanwood High for nine years.

vape education
Last month we shared information related to vaping. Here is that information again.
About 14% of U.S. high-school students and 3.3% of middle schoolers currently vape as of 2021, and the FDA and U.S. Surgeon General have declared it an epidemic. Research shows that vaping is dangerous, highly addictive, and harmful to a child’s health and brain development.
Frighteningly, vaping devices can also be manipulated and refilled with dangerous illicit substances, many of which can be harmful or deadly if used by an unsuspecting child. We are aware of the use of vaping devices in our community that have been laced with illegal drugs.
It is critical for families to talk with their children about the dangers of vaping and substance use. Our school administrators actively, in cooperation with our School Resource Officer, investigate and issue appropriate discipline and education on the dangers of vaping devices.
Ensuring the safety of students and staff requires an ongoing strong commitment to cooperation with our Stanwood-Camano families. As always, health and safety are our top priorities.
Find facts, information, and tips on how to talk with your teen about vaping at the American Lung Association website.

Zaid and Friends. A Celebration of Music.

A Celebration of Music.
Friday, June 16th, 7 pm
at Stanwood High School
Performing Arts Center
At the age of 5, Zaid Fackenthall began his musical journey on the piano, and later became proficient on the trumpet and as a vocalist. A year ago, Zaid was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma. The treatment appeared to be effective but then his cancer returned with a vengeance. The terminal prognosis of 3 months to 3 years has dashed his dreams for a long life as an engineer, ballroom dancer, and musician. Zaid has determined to live the best life possible in the time he is given, and that includes gathering his favorite musicians to perform in concert at the SHS Performing Arts Center. The concert will raise money for the Stanwood High School Arts program and for cancer research.
Even if you do not know Zaid well, attending this event would be a wonderful way to uplift him and show your love and support.
The Stanwood HS band boosters originally came up with the idea of honoring Zaid with a concert. The concept expanded to also include solo and group performances from those mentors and friends who helped him become the musician he is. In addition to Zaid's peers, we are looking forward to performances from many of the teachers and instructors who have helped develop the musical prowess of Stanwood/Camano community.
This event is sponsored by the Stanwood High School Band Boosters.
